BHOPAL: Thirty elderly tribals were blinded in one eye after a mass cataract operation, organised for free, in Mandla district, about 400 km from Madhya Pradesh's capital. The operations were conducted between September 11 and 16 by a private hospital.
All victims who underwent the surgery are residents of the Gond tribal-dominated Jhiria village panchayat area. The Shivraj Singh Chouhan government on Wednesday ordered an administrative probe into the incident and instructed the private hospital to pay Rs 30,000 as immediate assistance to each of the victims. The government also ordered the private hospital to pay Rs 500 as monthly pension to those who lost their sight.
''We have ordered a five-member team headed by the district collector to probe the incident,'' said minister of state for health Mahendra Hardia. ''A team of health experts from Bhopal will join the collectors team by Thursday and hold an independent inquiry. We are sending a third team of experts from Jabalpur. Initial reports suggested there could have been an infection in the operation theatre. But who is responsible for it and how it all happened can be ascertained only after a thorough probe,'' he said.
