11-04-2009 Surya Champs annual awards have been instituted by the Surya World to recognize and honour merit among the students of classes 10 and 12.

Surya Champs awards are based on the results of the National I Q Test conducted by the Foundation in December 2008. This is a multi-choice, computer scoring test which has been initiated to stress upon the importance of acquiring, applying knowledge and engaging in reasoning by the students. Around 150 students of class X and XII belonging to various schools of the region became the proud recipients of Surya Champs 2008 awards at a function held at the PHD Chamber of Commerce, Chandigarh on April 11, 2009. The Surya Champ 2008 trophy was lifted by Bhavan Vidyalaya, Chandigarh whose students scored the highest aggregate marks in the National I Q tests. The prizes were given away by the chief guest, Vice Chancellor of Punjab University Padma Shri Dr R C Sobti while Director, University Institute of Engineering and Technology Dr B S Sohi was the guest of honour on the occasion. Chairman of Surya World , Mr Rajiv Goyal presided over the ceremony.

While addressing the gathering Dr Sobti stated, “ In today`s world of cut-throat competition, there is an increased trend of memorising the subject matter without going for in-depth knowledge of the same. I appreciate the endeavour undertaken by Surya World to inculcate the habit of making an extra effort to sharpen general knowledge and subject skills in students through such tests”.

Appreciating the efforts of Surya World, Dr Sohi said that such platforms help children not only recognize but also hone their potential.

Students from twelve participating schools were awarded prizes which included gift vouchers worth Rs 2500, Rs 2000 and Rs 1000 for first, second and third prize winners respectively

Teachers Day - September 5th 2010
Surya World honours all teachers and faculty on teachers day

Teachers mould the lives that they influence. Lessons learned from teachers remain with their students throughout life. Teachers that break down barriers and reach into the souls of the students that they are responsible for do not get the recognition or gratitude they have earned. Many teachers are exhausted from their workload and responsibilities. They have their own families, financial and life stresses that challenge them along with everyone else. We should always respect our teachers. Teachers need encouragement and support from the community to feel that their devotion to students is appreciated.

Socrates was an example of a good teacher. He considered himself a learner as well as a teacher. For Socrates, love and friendship were the proper contexts for the pursuit of wisdom and goodness. Socrates saw himself only as a catalyst. He felt it was not his teaching, but actually the power of the Divine which enabled the person he was talking with to improve himself.

In India 5th September is celebrated as Teachers' day. 5th September is the birthday of a great teacher Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. When Dr. Radhakrishnan became the president of India in 1962, some of his students and friends approached him and requested him to allow them to celebrate 5th September, his "birthday". In reply, Dr, Radhakrishnan said, "instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers' day". The request showed Dr.Radhakrishnan's love for the teaching profession. From then onwards, the day has been observed as Teachers' Day in India.
