The government has decided to provide free education to all medal-winning students at the Commonwealth Games as a token of appreciation for their performance.
“Our boys and girls are competing with sportspersons who have better infrastructure in their countries, and our boys are doing well. They are our heroes and the nation must go out of its way to support them,” Sibal said.
The government’s plan is to pay for the education of sportpersons who are still studying. While college/university-going students and those in professional colleges would be supported by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) would bear the costs of educating school students. Sibal has said that even students studying in private schools would also be offered help.
The support would continue as long as the student medal-winner wishes to continue studies and would include tuition fee and maintenance expenditure (hostel fee etc). Both the CBSE and the UGC will soon work out the exact modalities in this regard. The minister also advised the UGC and CBSE to create schemes giving financial incentives to talented sportspersons and to strengthen sports infrastructure in schools and colleges.
