Krishna Poonia creates history. Indian women sweep discus throw
It was a spectacular moment for Indian athletics as discus thrower Krishna Poonia gave India its first-ever athletics gold medal in 52 years at the CWG. What’s more! It was a sweep for India in the event as gold, silver and bronze all went to the host nation.
Krishna Poonia made a name for herself and for the nation by coming up with a stellar effort at the Nehru stadium. Poonia took complete advantage of the absence of some really big names such as Dani Samuels of Australia, who is the reigning world champion and Janeth Jepkosegi, former Olympic and world champion in delivering a classy effort.
The 33-year old Poonia, who had managed to finish only 5th at Melbourne CWG in 2006 came up with the goods just when it mattered. She came up with a throw of 61.51, which was below her personal best of 63.69 in the season, which she achieved at Chula Vista in USA earlier this year. Krishna is coached by her husband Virender Poonia and is now setting her sights on the Asian Games next month in China. She was also a bronze medallist at the Doha Asiad in 2006.
