Her performance at the Commonwealth Games last week brought joy to many and on Monday, she reached Pune amidst massive fanfare.
Shooter Anisa Sayyed, who returned to her hometown after an inspiring performance in New Delhi, boarded off the flight one hour late of its schedule and was welcomed by handful of well wishers.
But little did the former Western Railway employee know that there was a surprise waiting for her. Soon after landing, Anisa drove to her coach’s place in Fatima Nagar and then rushed to Main Street camp, where a rally was organised by hundreds of sports enthusiasts.
In an open jeep, the rally moved to Sachapir Street en route to Azam Campus. The joy on the faces of the kids and even grown-ups was to be cherished. Despite the traffic coming to a standstill, the locals were eager to greet the golden girl. “I am thrilled the way these children and all the Puneites have come here. This is my city and I want to dedicate my medals to them,” said Anisa.
With traditional Maharashtrian music and local school band keeping the crowd entertained, the rally reached Azam Campus after huge response from the school and college students.
“The last time Pune witnessed such a huge welcome for a sportsperson was in 1998 when the Indian hockey skipper Dhanraj Pillay arrived after winning the gold medal at the Asian Games,” said one of the spectators.
