'Barapullah saves fuel worth 100 crore a year'
NEW DELHI: Nearly 60,000 vehicles daily use the Barapullah elevated road, built as a link between Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and the Commonwealth Games Village near the Akshardham temple during the 2010 event. According to PWD estimates, the road has cut short the travel time and fuel consumption substantially for communters from east Delhi travelling to south and vice-versa. The survey shows the current use pattern will save fuel worth Rs 100 crore annually.
After a review of PWD projects, minister Raj Kumar Chauhan reiterated that the two slip roads of the elevated road that will connect Moolchand and Nizamuddin will soon be ready.
Chauhan yet again highlighted the government's plan to extend the elevated corridor to INA Market in the second phase with more loops and slip roads, which will help decongest the Ring road. He also said that the government is mulling over the idea to connect Mayur Vihar with Barapulla, so that commuting between East, South and New Delhi become more comfortable.
Chauhan further said that three flyovers will be constructed near Bhalaswa, Mukundpur and Burari crossings. Besides, a new 6 lane road is proposed on the other side of the drain from Muqarba chowk to Wazirabad. This will help reducing highway and urban traffic on outer ring road.
The PWD review also explored the possibility of constructing two new bridges on Yamuna. One of the bridges is proposed to be constructed to connect Sonia Vihar with Buradi while the other will connect Teen Pushta to Chandagi Ram Akhara. This will help in reducing traffic on Wazirabad and Kashmere gate bridges.
