When will Rahul Gandhi play mixed doubles?
We live in a country where people seem to be obsessed with politicians, their lives and their past lives. And, perhaps no other family in India has drawn people's attention than the Nehru-Gandhi parivar.
From the days of lawyer and Congress leader Moti Lal Nehru, to the family's fifth generation and poster-boy Rahul Gandhi, people's thirst for knowing minutest details about India's numero uno dynasty hasn't quenched at all.
So as Rahul Gandhi turns 40 today, most Gandhi watchers seem to have the same question on their lips: When will India's most eligible bachelor get married? What will happen to this country if there is no sixth generation of the Nehru-Gandhi clan? Although Priyanka Gandhi is blessed with two children, she - at the moment- does not intend to join politics. (Cannot say what her children will do in the future).
Says, Mohammad Irfan Sheikh, writer of the book The Magic of Rahul Gandhi, "Even though the Gandhis' prefer to keep their personal life a closely guarded secret, rumors are always rife when question comes to Rahul Gandhi's marriage,"
The young Gandhi has always evaded questions about his marriage.
"I have no time for marriage", "I will let you know when that happens" - are some of the readymade and unimaginative replies whenever asked about his marriage.
The more this political dynasty tries to shield its personal life from the public glare, the more curious the public becomes. People have turned to history books to find out how Moti Lal Nehru got married twice after he lost his first wife. There is interest about the Nehru lineage -- that Jawaharlal Nehru, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, and Krishna were children from Moti Lal Nehru's second marriage.
People also love to read how Nehru married a Kamla Kaul, a Kashmri Brahmin born into a middle-class family and later about India's first prime minister's platonic affair with Edwina Mountbatten.
There are fascinating stories about Indira Gandhi falling in love with a Parsi, Feroze Gandhi, in 1942 during the Quit India movement and how she got married to him much against the wishes of some of the orthodox members of the Nehru family. Her prime minister father Nehru, although, publicly never opposed this marriage.
Rajiv Gandhi, a commercial pilot had little interest in politics when he fell in love with Italian-born Sonia or Antonia Maino and decided to get married to her. There are all interesting details how Amitabh Bachchan's mother Teji Bachchan who performed the kanyadaan on Sonia's behalf.
If Rajiv married an Italian, even his brother Sanjay's marriage was not free from controversy. Indira Gandhi's younger son, Sanjay Gandhi married a model and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi who could never get along with her mother-in-law and the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and was eventually thrown out of house, bag and baggage.
Even Priyanka Gandhi's marriage to a Moradabad brass exporter's son Robert Vadhra, made a lot of headlines after Vadhra family's relations strained with 10, Janpath; eventually forcing Robert to make public announcement that he had snapped all relations with his family.
As Rahul Gandhi turns 40 today, people wish him good luck. At the same time they are also curious to know: When will Rahul Gandhi marry? If yes, to whom - a foreigner or an Indian? And, above all, will his marriage be free of controversies?
