NDMC, MCD cleaning army swoops on Games Village

Nearly 500 NDMC sanitation staff today joined 550 MCD workers to complete a massive cleaning operation at the Commonwealth Games Village, which had faced complaints of being "filthy and uninhabitable". Some 400 MCD sanitation employees and 150 supervisory staff were deployed in two shifts to clean the outside and general area of the Village in east Delhi while NDMC sanitation staff cleared the dirt inside rooms and toilets.
Officials said the operation will be over by tonight and if required, the cleaners will work through the night.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta, NDMC Chairman Parimal Rai and Municipal Commissioner K S Mehra visited the Village.
Fogging and spraying of anti-larval chemical were also conducted in the area.
In an embarrassment to the organisers less than two weeks before the Commonwealth Games, the CGF had earlier this week termed the Athletes Village "filthy and uninhabitable" and gave the Organising Committee two days to sort out the mess.
After a direction from the Cabinet Secretary, DDA handed over charge of the Games Village to the Delhi government yesterday. The cleaning teams also checked facilities like electrical fittings, plumbing, carpentry and lifts.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has also rounded up stray dogs from in and around the Village.
