NEW DELHI: The Organizing Committee (OC) of the Commonwealth Games is now also short of protocol volunteers. The initial target was to assemble 900 protocol volunteers for the VIP delegates and athletes but only around 40 per cent have come forward till now. Sources said that the Organizing Committee (OC) had appointed around 70 volunteers for airport duty, and only two of them have turned up.
Similarly at the Games village, out of 100 volunteers who were supposed to lend their helping hands, 15 of them have shown up. Some of the accredited protocol volunteers who are supposed to attend their duties came forward, took the kit, and then disappeared, sources said.
The situation was managed to some extent with help from some corporate houses which included Sahara which provided 300 workers for the Games. Sources also said that the OC has demanded 50 more workers from Sahara for hospitality purposes.
"We don't have volunteers to look after the delegates who are and will be staying in the city hotels. So, we have asked Sahara to provide us with more volunteers since no one is coming forward," an OC official said.
