Yamuna Recedes In Delhi

New Delhi | Sep 26, 2010

Water level in Yamuna receded significantly today although it remained marginally above the danger mark of 204.83 metre.

With water level receding in the river, flood-like situation in several low-lying areas in East Delhi improved.

"The water level has come down to 204.85 at 10 pm from yesterday's 205.82 metre. The river is still flowing 2 cm above the danger mark of 204.83 metre. The level is expected to recede further tomorrow," an official of the Flood Control department said.

The situation in flood affected Usmanpur Pusta, Jagatpur Village and Shastri Nagar and Yamuna Vihar has improved significantly, he said, adding that some people staying in the relief camps have been asked to leave as and when situation improves in their areas.

The water level in Yamuna had gone up in the last few days as rain-battered Haryana has been constantly releasing huge quantity of water from Hathinikund barrage.

The water level in Yamuna had crossed the 207-metre mark for first time in 32 years on Wednesday submerging several areas including Garhi Mandu, Usmanpur Pusta, Jagatpur Village and Shastri Nagar, Yamuna Vihar, Madanpur, Sonia Vihar, Nigambodh, Jaitpur, Tibet Market and Yamuna Bazar.
