It is this compound that leads to the burn you feel from touching or eating a hot pepper. While there are certainly some benefits to eating hot peppers, such as their distinctive taste, some people feel a burning sensation from heartburn or indigestion in their stomach afterward.


Take an over-the-counter antacid. Follow the instructions provided with the product for proper dosage. According to the FamilyEducation website, an antacid is the most common way to treat heartburn associated with spicy foods.


Drink one-half cup of milk. Milk may help neutralize the acid the forms from eating spicy foods, but it's important not to drink so much that it further irritates your stomach. Skim milk is best, because the fat can be another irritant. As an alternative, FamilyEducation suggests water may work in a pinch as well. Sit in an upright position for at least 30 minutes after ingesting the liquid.



Sleep or rest in an upright position. MayoClinic.com reports that elevating your head puts gravity to work for you. Rest with pillows under your upper torso so that your head is at least six to nine inches above your feet. Lie down in this position after eating hot peppers to help relieve the heartburn.
