Anti-corruption movement to be intensified: Prashant Bhushan

NEW DELHI: Protests against in support of the Lokpal Bill will be intensified in days to come, Anna Hazare's associate Prashant Bhushan said on Tuesday. "A protest march will take place tomorrow from India Gate to Parliament House," Bhushan, a key figure in the Hazare movement, said. Protests have been planned across the country to vent their anger "peacefully and in a non-violent" manner against the detention of Hazare and his supporters, he said. Bhushan appealed to all government servants to go on mass leave on Wednesday.

Addressing the media shortly after the arrests of Hazare and his father and former law minister Shanti Bhushan, among others, the lawyer termed the police action "totally undemocratic" and said the campaign would approach the Supreme Court against the arrests. "Time has come to rise up against this government. We appeal to people to protest against the government peacefully," Bhushan said. India Against Corruption, the organisation that fronts Anna's campaign mobilised support through social media platforms through the day and communicated details about protests being planned across the country.

Bhushan alleged that the action against Hazare was taken at the behest of the Centre. "The decision to detain Anna Hazare or to deny permission for his protest were taken by Cabinet Ministers . It is not the Delhi Police which is taking these decisions. There is no freedom for Delhi Police. It has become a puppet, an ornament in the hands of Central government," Bhushan said.

Home Minister P Chidambaram later termed his comments "careless at best" and termed Bhushan's appeal to government servants to strike work a "wrong call" . 'The minister requested government officials to not heed to the call.
