Srinagar is set to lose ‘disturbed area’ tag, 32 of 51 pickets to go
Srinagar is set to be declared a “not disturbed area”. The J&K Cabinet is likely to order the denotification soon, sources said. The Unified Command, including Army representatives, is not opposed to the plan.
The Centre is backing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and has asked the CRPF to remove 16 pickets from downtown. Another 16 pickets — of a total 51 — will be removed too to stop the relentless search and checking by security forces. The remaining pickets are outside VVIP areas or in lanes leading to VVIP residences.
This is part of the exercise to redeploy security forces without disturbing the counter-insurgency grid. Sources said 600 (one battalion) CRPF personnel have been redeployed in Baramulla from Srinagar as part of the “rationalisation”.
