Taking due cognizance of the UK Parliament’s discussion on Jammu and Kashmir, India on Thursday said that civil liberties and freedoms are exercised by “each and every citizen” of the country’s 1.2 billion people and emphasised that there were effective mechanisms within its democratic framework to address any “aberration”.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said, “We take due note of the proposed debate in the UK House of Commons, which we believe is an initiative of back-bencher MPs and does not reflect the position of the government.”
India’s reaction came after the House of Commons decided to discuss the alleged rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir.
