ADB to provide Rs 908 cr loan to develop roads in Northeast
NEW DELHI: The Asian Development Bank will provide loan assistance of over Rs 900 crore to upgrade around 433 km of roads in the North Eastern states.
Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region P S Ghatowar said his ministry has drawn up a plan to improve key road network in the region at an estimated cost of Rs 1,353 crore out of which Rs 908 crore will be provided by the ADB.
Ghatowar was replying to question in Lok Sabha. The scheme will cover 137.6 kms of road in Assam, 93.2 kms of road in Manipur, 93.4 km in Meghalaya, 55 km in Mizoram, 34.2 km in Sikkim and 20.3 kms of road in Tripura, the Minister said.
With lack of connectivity posing as a major hindrance in the economic growth of the northeast, the Centre has identified transport network as priority area for the region.
The government has already decided to bring all the state capitals in the region under railway and air network.
The Railways has already undertaken an ambitious project to link all capital cities at an estimated investment of Rs 17,000 crore by 2017.
Till now, railway network is available in Assam and some parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
