NEW DELHI: CPM leader Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday criticized the government for bringing the Lokpal Bill ahead of the Constitution amendment. He said in case Lokpal Bill gets adopted and not the Constitution amendment, it would become infructuous.

"The Bill brought by the government is a public relation exercise. It is not serious," Yechury said adding that his party has moved 11 concrete amendments. Stating that there are still a lot of imponderables, Yechury said it is not clear what would happen over the next two days. "Government is trying to show that it is serious and opposition is not letting the Bill get passed. The exercise is not to legislate an institution but to do politics," he said.

Yechury said the Bill should have been brought under Article 252 and not Article 253 as government has done. "Government is saying it is bringing the Bill under Article 253 because India ratified international convention against corruption. But the Bill is about fighting corruption internally inside the country. Article 252 respects the federal structure of the country", he said.

Asked if CPM and BJP are working together, Yechury said the two parties are yet to discuss the issue.
