Lokpal Bill: Five options before Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: There are five options before the Rajya Sabha when the debate on Lokpal Bill is over and the time to vote come. The United Progressive Alliance Government is in a minority in the Rajya Sabha and the Opposition led by the Bharatiya Janata Party will leave no stones unturned to embarrass the ruling alliance.

The first option is to pass the Lokpal Bill as it has come from the Lok Sabha. The second option is to to pass the Bill with amendments while the third one is to defer the vote as has been done with the Judicial Accountability Bill.

Another option is to refer it to the select committee and the final one is to dump the Bill altogether.

Sources have said that the Lokpal Bill is likely to be sent to a select committee. Sources said that this is the last option but if the Sense of House is in favour of the move, then the Bill will be sent to the committee.

The Bill will be sent to the select committee after the debate in the Rajya Sabha for which eight hours have been allotted by the Chairman of the House, Mohammad Hamid Ansari.

A select committee is meant for specific purpose for a specific bill and the changes suggested by the select committee will be binding on the government.

The Congress core group will meet on Thursday evening and is ready to send to the Bill to the select committee if all options fail.
