Nayak: The Real Hero is a 2001 Indian movie starring Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerji. It was directed by S. Shankar. The film is a remake of S. Shankar's earlier released Tamil film Mudhalvan (1999). The film's score and soundtrack, composed by A. R. Rahman, were dubbed from Mudhalvan into Hindi for the film. It was critically acclaimed, although it could not do big business. Overtime, it has been considered an underrated film with a superb performance by Anil Kapoor and a "cult classic".

[edit] Synopsis
Q TV's ace reporter, Shivajirao , gets a chance of being the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, albeit for a day, after being challenged by Chief Minister Balraj Chauhan himself. Shivaji accepts the challenge, and takes over the job, assisted by cunning personal assistant, Bansal. He comes across close to 46000 corrupt officials, and orders their suspension; tours the city and surrounding areas, makes sweeping changes, including the arrests of 12 ministers, including Balraj himself, much to chagrin of the people in power. After his tenure is over, he attempts to get back to his normal life, but finds out that that one day has not only changed his entire life, but has threatened the life of his near and dear ones in a State that considers "honesty" a liability.
[edit] Plot
Shivaji Rao(Anil Kapoor) is a reporter in a reputed news channel & his aide is Topi(Johnny Lever). One day, a riot breaks out in the city, that is initiated by bus drivers. By chance, Shivaji, who is going to his office, eavesdrops a conversation between the leader of bus driver union & Chief Minister Baldev Chauhan(Amrish Puri), which indicates that the C.M. wants the riot to continue for political mileage.
Later, Shivaji calls Baldev in a talk show & plays back the tape. Baldev is horrified to learn about the incriminating evidence, but blames Shivaji of working for opposition. Shivaji counters his allegations, which leads to Chauhan making a strange wager:- Shivaji should trade places with him for one day & see what a life of a politician is. Baldev thinks that Shivaji will end up making laughing stock of himself, while Baldev's image would get bolstered.
Baldev's assumptions, however, fall flat. Shivaji takes the challenge. Chauhan's secretary Bansal(Paresh Rawal) is more than happy that if at least for one day, somebody with a clean character & conscience is taking the reins. Shivaji turns tables on Chauhan by making corruption virtually impossible in just one day. Also, he makes Chauhan pay for his sins by getting him arrested for his sins, just before the time of the wager is about to end.
Chauhan decides that Shivaji is his & most dangerous enemy. Later on, Shivaji gets elected to the chair again due to his results shown in one day. Shivaji comes up with various simple schemes to help people with little hassles. He even foils Chauhan's attempts to blow up sensitive places to undermine Shivaji's image. Chauhan tries to kill Shivaji many times, which leads to the killing of Shivaji's parents in a bomb blast.
However, Shivaji is apparently hurt when Chauhan flippantly remarks that the attacks & their thwarting are both the works of Shivaji. He even goes on to say that Shivaji himself killed his parents to garner sympathy & give authenticity to the whole plan. Shivaji calls Chauhan for a private talk in his office. Chauhan starts mocking him. When he sees a pistol in Shivajis hands, he thinks that Shivaji is trying to kill him.
He still keeps on mocking Shivaji, until Shivaji stuns him by shooting himself in the arm. Shivaji throws the pistol in Chauhan's hands. When the guards arrive, they see the pistol in Chauhan's hands & think that he shot Shivaji. All the guards open fire at him, killing him on the spot. Shivaji is rescued & later, all the cronies of Chauhan are arrested.
In the end, Chauhan is seen walking in his office. The complaint box, where people were supposed to fill in their complaints & information about various threats anonymously, is shown to be empty, signifying that the reasons to be afraid have been taken care of.
