Sheila plans heavy fine, strict punishment for female foeticide(good news..I had written an article in dainik Bhaskar newspaper earlier on this issue in context of haryana's rate of girl child foeticide and its decreasing birth rate in that state and in general....Hope it get implemented fast!!!...VT)

Noting that her government was determined to come down hard on those involved in female foeticide, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday said there were plans to impose a heavy fine and award strict punishment to offenders in such cases.

“The government is considering a heavy fine and strict punishment for those involved in such incidents,” Dikshit said after flagging off a walk at the India Gate lawns to mark World Population Day.

She said female foeticide was causing imbalance in the city’s gender ratio. “We will have to intensify our efforts to save the girl child at any cost. The society will have to intensify the campaign so the ratio of girls and boys can be made even,” she said.

As per existing legislation, any ultrasound clinic can be closed down if it conducts pre-natal sex determination test.

The 2011 census data said that the sex ratio of 866 women per 1,000 men in the Capital is the fourth lowest among all the states and Union Territories.

The overall sex ratio at the national level has increased by 7 points since the 2001 Census to reach 940 females per 1,000 males. This is the highest sex ratio recorded since 1971 and a shade lower than 1961.

Dikshit said population growth was a hindrance to the government in providing essential services to all.

The Chief Minister administered a pledge, aimed at spreading awareness on the ill-effects of population growth, to a group of youths.
