PATNA: Bihar has to play a significant role in fulfilling the ever-growing need for skilled manpower across sectors and narrowing the existing gap between the demand and supply of skills in the country, said Subramanian Ramadorai, adviser to the PM for National Skill Development Council (NSDC), here on Wednesday.
Talking to TOI, Ramadorai, who was on a day’s visit to the state capital, said the Centre has launched a world-class vocational skill development programme to meet the skills’ requirement of the economically growing country. He met chief secretary Anup Mukherjee and other senior officials of various departments to apprise them about the programme.
“Bihar, with over 10 crore manpower, will also be a part of the endeavour and help the mission significantly,” Ramadorai, the former Tata Consultancy Services CEO, who is considered the man behind the success of the company, said.
By 2022, India will need 500 million vocationally skilled young professionals. NSDC is striving to meet this challenge and is working to skill/up-skill 500 million people by 2022, he said.
“We will provide all possible assistance to Bihar government to enhance employability among youth through supplementary skill development. The focus is on skilling and up-skilling country’s mobile manpower,” Ramadorai, hand-picked by PM to be his adviser early this year, added.
“Our aim is to orient students towards vocational training rights from class IX, so that they can be more employable. We will determine skills and competency standards for various jobs which will be used by companies to assess employee performance and skill development needs,” he told reporters.
“For the purpose, we will strengthen the existing institutions providing vocational education in the state. With the shortage of trained workforce being huge in Bihar, we will also plan to set up new institutions,” Ramadorai said in reply to a question.
Bihar HRD minister P K Sahi, who was also present on this occasion, said large human resource was one of the great assets in the state. “Bihar has tremendous human resource; if trained in sync with the industry requirements of the day, this very resource will take the state to great heights,” he said.
“Along with the state government’s initiatives to strengthen vocational education, the national endeavour will work as a catalyst in bringing about a turnaround in employment generation,” Sahi said, adding “Ramadoraiji has promised all possible expert guidance, assistance and support in making quality vocational education reach all.”
