In a round table conference hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, the alumni and directors of the five IITs have decided to address the urgent need to take action against the challenge of climate change.
Even as all the IITs are working on environment-related projects, a proposal to set up a virtual centre at IIT Bombay for studying climate change was floated. This centre would co-ordinate with all the environment-related faculties across IITs.
Driven by the urgent need to take action against climate change, the conference explored options to channelise the knowledge and technology management capabilities of IIT alumni in addressing the developmental solutions through low carbon and climate-resilient development. All the IITs have research programmes related to climate change but considering the magnitude of the problem it would be useful to have coordination among the IITs while addressing some of the challenges of climate change. This is the reason for proposing the idea of setting up a virtual centre.
The participants of the conference also discussed the need for setting up executive programmes to promote awareness about climate change. The IIT alumni climate change initiative has planned to establish a platform of IIT alumni dedicated to developing climate change strategies and actions in the public and private sectors. The next pan IIT meet is scheduled to be held in the United States in June 2011 where the alumni will launch their plan of action.
