BIKANER: Cutting across party affiliations and ideologies, people of Bikaner put up a rare sight of unity recently demanding higher educational institutes for the town. The occasion was the tour of four-member committee constituted to select the site for the proposed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Central University and World Class University in Rajasthan. The committee headed by Prof Vijay Shankar Vyas is visiting various cities of Rajasthan to get an on-the-spot assessment of the facilities available.
The committee organized an open session at Circuit House where it was flooded by memorandums supporting the plea for Bikaner. The leaders of all political parties were present at the occasion. The former president of the state Congress, BD Kalla, submitted that to correct the regional imbalance and injustice the IIT should be immediately allotted to Bikaner. He said that the city has ample land, enough power and water supply. It is also well connected with rail, road and air connectivity is on the anvil. The veteran BJP leader Manik Chand Surana strongly advocated the candidature of Bikaner for setting up these institutes. A delegation of literateurs also met the committee. Teams of businessmen, traders, students' unions, hoteliers, educationists and journalists also met members of the committee and made similar demands.
Later the chairman of committee Vijay Shankar Vyas informed the gathering that the role of the committee is only advisory and the state government would take the final decision.
