Media and society : Cafe Coffee Day join hands with American Express CHATTING LONG hours with friends, sipping a cup of coffee at Café Coffee Day with ipods and a junkie get-up. If that’s what you think of today's youth, think again. Today’s independent youth think beyond this and are more interested in making a mark for themselves and building their career prospects. Today's youth wants to race ahead of time and achieve everything they aspire to at a very young age and the field of media allows them to do just that. Today, there is an overwhelming increase in the number of media applicants in the country and there is also a tremendous rise in independent ventures among the youth.
Every passing year has seen an increase in the number of applicants in media institutes in India. The youth today believe that media is one such profession which provides them ample amount of scope to showcase their talent. It is seen as a profession where age is no barrier and talent is of utmost importance. Today's youth can venture into various avenues like event management, public relations, advertising, online journalism, print journalism and broadcast journalism. One not only needs a theoretical knowledge base but also a considerable amount of on field exposure if one is to get noticed. Internships are a necessity to gain exposure and for acquiring enough practical knowledge.
Sneha Padiyath a media trainee feels that, “Media is one profession where I have the freedom to express and say what I want to. Though honestly I don’t think media can be learnt theoretically but yes I agree that in order to practice and have on-field experience, the foundation and the basics should be clear and this is precisely the reason why I have enrolled myself in a PG course in Media and Communication."
Amrita Jain opines that, “I want to venture into journalism and an internship with a leading newspaper has given me so much exposure and taught me so much that books couldn’t. Internships are a must when it comes to getting into the field of media. They provide a small insight into what actually happens in the industry way before you join it.”
All that the youth today needs is a platform for expression, a forum to receive answers to their queries. The youth feels that the media is today the right place to voice their opinion and many of them see it as an easy way to fame. The profession of media also means faces go unnoticed for quite some time. Yet they feel that media is the only profession that gives them creative satisfaction and independence. To sum up, today's youth looks at the media industry as a medium for free expression and creative independence.
