''Resolution of Kashmir issue key to durable peace in region''

Islamabad, Oct 12 (PTI) Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani today said durable peace and economic development of the entire South Asian region hinged upon the peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute.

Gilani made the remarks during a meeting with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi at the Prime Minister''s House.

He appreciated the Foreign Ministry''s role in highlighting what he described as "human rights violations" in Jammu and Kashmir at international forums, including the UN.

Qureshi met the premier ahead of a crucial meeting of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan forum to be held in Brussels on October 15.

Pakistan looks forward to a "positive response" from the FoDP, especially in the aftermath of colossal losses caused by devastating floods, Gilani said.

Pakistan''s economy suffered a "staggering loss of billions of dollars due to the floods", he said.

The government is mobilising indigenous resources to respond to the challenge and the reordering of budget priorities reflects its resolve to rehabilitate flood victims, he added.

Major western countries are expected to link further aid to Pakistan to economic and political reforms at the FoDP ministerial meeting that will be attended by Qureshi.

Gilani welcomed the European Union''s decision to give enhanced market access to Pakistani products and said the concession was the fruit of successful diplomacy by the government.

These concessions, he said, will improve the country''s exports to European markets.

Qureshi briefed the Prime Minister about his recent visit to the UN and participation in the UN Summit on Millennium Development Goals.
