Deputy superintendent of police Nagnath Marutirav Sambhatwad was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths for taking a bribe of Rs4 lakh in his Mira Road office on Thursday.

The arrest was made after a local councillor of the Mira-Bhayandar Corporation registered a complaint against the officer.

According to police, the complainant has purchased a land from Seven Eleven private limited. “Around 10 days ago, a third person known as Mahesh Boria removed the board of Seven Eleven Company from the said property,” said ACB officer. “After the incident, the complainant and the director of the Seven Eleven company approached the senior police inspector of the Navghar police station and registered the complaint against Boria. But seeing no action was taken by the senior police inspector, the complainant approached Sambhatwad and gave him a written application on August 9,” the officer said, adding that “when the complainant went to meet Sambhatwad for the second time, he demanded Rs5 lakh to take action against Boria”.

The complainant then approached the ACB and lodged a complaint against Sambhatwad. “On the basis of the complaint, we laid a trap and arrested Sabhatwad red-handed while taking Rs4 lakh bribe at his office in Mira Road,” said additional commissioner of police, ACB, Niket Kaushik.
