Bikaner airport still remains a dream

BIKANER: The dream of people of Bikaner to fly high may not get fullfilled even after the issuance of a NOC by the Union defence ministry for construction of civil air terminal and apron. Besides other terms and conditions, height of buildings is an important one for which the ministry has bound Airport Authority of India (AAI) that the vertical extent (highest point) of the building shall not exceed 5 metres above the ground level or 228 metres above mean sea level.

This condition has held up all activities at the civil air terminal at Nal, Bikaner. The building which has been constructed is of 6.30 metres, which exceeds the limit set by the defence ministry. If the ministry sticks to its condition, the AAI will be left with no other option but to demolish the extra portion of the building. District collector, Bikaner has also assured to provide Rs 30 lakh to AAI for reducing the height of the building through UIT, Bikaner.

AGM, AAI for Nal project R S Meena told TOI that one more attempt will be made to obtain the NOC for 6.30 metre height as it is suitable for carrying out flight-related task. And if the ministry is not ready to give the NOC for more than 5 metres, we will reduce the height. He said there will be no specific technical problem in flights, if the height is reduced to five metres. He said about 30% of construction of civil air terminal and apron has been completed but a lot of work remains.

AGM Meena negated reports of obstacles in flights due to lesser height and said there will be no specific technical difficulty in height up to 5 metre, but it will limit our scope for decoration-related work as in such a situation the terminal will be left with free area of only 3 metres which will not be sufficient.

On the other hand, Bikaner MP Arjun Meghwal told TOI that he has a written communication from AAI in which they have mentioned difficulties in managing flights if the height is limited to 5 metres.
