NEW DELHI: The deadlock over the price rise issue continued with the government and the Opposition adamantly sticking to their stands. While refusing to allow adjournment motion on the issue, the government passed the buck to the presiding officers of Parliament-Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari.


A rather harassed looking Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Bansal on Tuesday reiterated that the government is “prepared to discuss any of the 62 items listed by the Opposition under relevant rules, which has to be decided by the presiding officers.”

Interestingly at the Lok Sabha Business Advisory Council meeting, all parties agreed to assign time for the Jharkhand resolution proclaiming President’s Rule, the SBI amendment bill and the Pesticides Management Bill for Wednesday despite no apparent resolution on the price rise issue.

Left Parties, which put in another adjournment motion notice along with the SP vehemently denied any rapprochement was possible.

“We are not interested in any discussion, we want voting on price rise,’’ CPM Lok Sabha leader Basudev Acharya said. However, sources in the government indicated that a breakthrough was possible by the end of this week, “the discussion may take place either on Friday or by Monday.”

However, Bansal refused to confirm, “I will say whatever I’ve to on the floor of the House on Wednesday.” This led to speculation that the price rise discussion may take place as early as Wednesday.

“It’s been listed in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. If the Opposition wants, it can have a short-duration discussion in the Upper House on Wednesday,” Bansal noted. As for the Lok Sabha, all eyes are on the cracks that may develop in the Opposition.

Surprisingly, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said, the discussion was likely to take place in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. “We will put across the steps taken by the government to control inflation and rise in food price,’’he said
