Patna: The Bihar government will soon formulate a new policy on population control. The policy will be framed in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF).
Health Department Principal Secretary C K Mishra said the policy on population control was being framed on a priority basis.
“We are going to hold a meeting with the concerned officials for the purpose on July 19,” Mishra said, adding that several agencies have been engaged in the framing of the new policy.
The agencies would provide relevant information. The draft of the policy will be submitted to the government before the Assembly elections due to be held later this year, he clarified.
According to Health Department sources, the government could not announce its population policy earlier as first the Finance Department raised some queries and then the Planning and Development Department detected certain loopholes in it, saying that the draft policy did not provide for any incentive to the people for adopting the small-family norm.
According to authoritative sources, 60 per cent women in Bihar become pregnant at the age of 20 years. The study conducted by the Health Department revealed that 27 lakh people are born in Bihar every year. However, seven lakh of them die.
