CHENNAI: A court to deal exclusively with cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act will start functioning at the Madras high court premises on Friday. At the inaugural on Thursday, Justice Elipe Dharma Rao of the Madras high court said 151 cases registered under the act and pending in various sessions courts in the city would be transferred to the new court along with 221 first information reports (FIR).

The court at Chennai is one of the four sanctioned by the state government to try corruption cases following a proposal sent by the high court. While two courts -- at Coimbatore and Madurai -- have started functioning, the one at Trichy will be inaugurated on Friday With this, the total number of courts in the city has gone up to 105. At present, posts of 16 district judges, four fast-track court judges, five sub-judges and 73 munsifs are vacant and are contributing to the pendency of cases, Justice Elipe Dharma Rao said.

"Steps are being taken by the high court to fill up these vacancies at the earliest," he said.
