Pune Minister for Water Resources Ajit Pawar on Thursday said the state government would soon declare a policy for promotion of solar energy in the state to meet the power demands of the state.
“The state government has been promoting projects of wind energy for generating renewable energy and has a specific policy in place for the purpose. On the same lines, a policy for promoting use of solar energy will be declared that would help in generating power,” Pawar said at a function in the city.

The state government has recently floated tenders for setting up solar energy projects to generate 125 MW power, he said, adding, “The idea is to promote use of solar energy in parts of the state where there is barren land. We expect it to be more beneficial in Marathwada area.”

An area of five acre land is required to generate one MW power and installing solar panels in the area with less green cover, said Pawar.

“The government has decided to make the entire state free of load shedding by 2012. Thus, efforts are being taken to promote all source of energy for power generation,” he added.

Pawar said the small biogas plants being set up across the city by the civic body has proved that power generated is usable in the respective areas.

“The disposal of solid waste within the respective electoral ward through biogas plants is a good initiative with dual target of waste disposal and power generation being achieved through it,” he said.

Pawar, who also holds the water resource ministry, said the dams in the state get filled by July end, but this is not the case this year.

“The demand of water is increasing in the cities and the government has been reducing the supply for agriculture so that it meets the needs of urban population,” he said.

In Pune, the state was supplying 5 TMC water and using rest for irrigation purpose, but now 14 TMC water is being supplied to meet the city demand by cutting the water supplied for agriculture purpose, Pawar said, urging the citizens to use water carefully.
