Time to start discussions on Telangana statehood: Ghulam Nabi Azad
NEW DELHI: After tendering their resignations, Congress ministers, MPs and MLAs from Telangana region in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday met Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who supervises the party's affairs in the state, here on Tuesday in a bid to persuade the central leadership to accept demand for creating a separate state.
They also explained as to why they had put in their papers and agreed to participate in discussions on the issue.
Senior minister K Jana Reddy told reporters after the meeting that they will continue to discuss the issue of formation of a separate Telangana state with the high command.
"We will continue to be part of the discussions. We explained to Azad the conditions under which we put in our papers," Reddy said.
Meanwhile, Azad told a news channel that "it is time for discussion on a separate state (for Telangana)". He also said that discussions have to be held with people of various regions of the state on the sensitive issue. "It is a sensitive and complex issue and needs wider consultations," he said.
The Congress, on its part, did not comment on the emerging situation created by the resignations of party MPs, legislators and ministers in support of the demand for a Telangana state.
"It is a sensitive and emotional issue. We are aware of the situation. An appropriate decision will be taken at an appropriate time," Congress spokesperson and general secretary Shakeel Ahmed said.
Ten Congress MPs and 40 legislators resigned on Monday in support of the demand for creating a new state of Telangana.
Besides Reddy, Ponnala Laxmaiah and Basavaraj Saraiah also met Azad. They reached here from Hyderabad on Monday night.
Two MPs - Madhu Goud Yashki and Ponnam Prabhakar and one MLA and one MLC also met Azad. Sources said the ministers and the MPs are trying to get an appointment with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.
Parliamentarians and legislators from Andhra Pradesh's Telangana region, who have not yet submitted their resignations, are facing the ire of groups who are pressing for a separate state.
