LGBT community, doctors slam Azad’s remarks on homosexuality/(Good that people are now fully aware about its all aspects. As law protect kids, adults can protect themselves with awareness, alertness and being cautious.A small communities cannot be dangerous for all and our society,if we are careful about all the relations around and understand their well being and right and wrong its not a very big issue.....VT)

It’S not only the lesbian gay bisexual transgender (LGBT) community in Pune that is shocked but doctors, among others, have expressed surprise that the country’s health minister feels homosexuality is a disease.

Dr Bhushan Shukla, child and adolescent psychiatrist, who along with six other doctors filed affidavits in the Supreme Court stating that homosexuality is not a disease, told Newsline that Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad’s statement was sacrilegious. “It is such a shock that he is making a fundamental mistake. The world had corrected its stand on homosexuality in the 70s; it’s sad that the higher echelons of Indian polity have yet to digest this fact.”

Bindumadhav Khire, president of Sampathik Trust that works with Men Having Sex with Men in the city, said both DSM IV (Diagnosis Manual) and ICD10 (International Classification of Diseases) do not mention homosexual orientation as a disease. “Homosexuality was considered unnatural a long time ago, but it’s no longer so.”
