Revisiting Rajasthan: Enchanting Bikaner

Located in north-west Rajasthan, the quaint city of Bikaner will have you bowled with its unending stretch of sand dunes and magnificent red and yellow sandstone architecture. The city was founded way back in 1488 AD by the Rathore prince Rao Bikaji, son of Rao Jodhaji, the founder of Jodhpur.

A strained relationship with his father prompted Rao Bikaji to set up a kingdom of his own away from Jodhpur. He transformed a large portion of virgin land north of Jodhpur into the Bikaner we know of today. The colourful city is surrounded by a 7 km long wall with 5 gates and is home to numerous forts, temples and havelis.
