Polluted playgrounds: A curse for our children

They say the truth is ugly, but in this case it is also disgusting!

How do you like to go up in the swing; Up in the sky so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing; Ever a child can do...

These lines are from a poem by Robert Louise Stevenson who talks about a child's aspiration and imagination. The poem goes on to describe gurgling rivers, green meadows and blue skies under which happy children play. But Stevenson must be turning in his grave at the thought of the conditions in which many kids across the world are forced to play today.

Often, you will find little kids scampering, swimming and giggling, oblivious of the filth, garbage and waste surrounding them. And what makes it more wretched is that these innocent beings do so with a smile and just as much gusto. A look at polluted playgrounds around the world:

A local boy sits in a pile of algae as his friend runs on top of it at a beach in Qingdao, Shandong province in China.
