Italy's leader says Obama exceeded expectations
UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- Italian Premier Mario Monti says President Barack Obama went far beyond his expectations in backing the economic reforms he instituted to lead the country out of its financial quagmire.
Monti said Obama's support both publicly and privately at the White House on Thursday was important because of his role as a world leader.
The Italian leader, who replaced Silvio Berlusconi in November, said it will take longer for markets to react to Italy's reforms.
Monti told a press conference Friday evening after talks with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that he is returning to Rome "more determined than ever ... to continue our action on economic reforms."
Obama hosted Monti at the White House this week. The two leaders discussed Italy's efforts to restore market confidence.
