Today...8/3/2010...I Went to see inaugural play of SAARC WOMEN THEATRE FESTIVAL's-' NATI VINODANI'...directed by Ms AMAL ALLANA...chairperson of NSD...!
A play not so great in conveying its msg accurately...but otherwise very good combination of script,acting, music,dance and technical effects...quite crisp...100minutes non stop melodrama...got standing ovation by the audience...!!!At times this main character was sounding like CHANDRAMUKHI of DEVDAAS.
NATI BINODINI..is based on the autobiography of court dancer turned theatre actress Binodini of ninteenth century, AAMAAR KAATHA..a remarkable document as it is one of the earliest such accounts by an indian woman, which describes her coming into public life and having the courage to assert her independence and identity. A prostitute by birth, Binodini was among the first women actors to walk the board of the public stage in Calcutta, rising to become one of its most successful stars. Staunchy opposed by a class and caste-ridden society that was unable to tolerate a 'polluted' woman donning the garb of either devi/goddess or brahmin royalty on stage. Binodini was hailed and castigated in turn, making hers a dramatic and complex life, full of highs and lows.
(in case of bollywood movies also, before LATE SMT DEVIKARANI,first leading lady of indian mainstream bollywood movies, well educated,brahmin girl...there were great scarcity of women actress in film world and those characters of women were enacted by men only or some court dancers...Girls from respectable familes/well educated/with good or rich background never came in early days...so see the STRUGGLE OF WOMEN TO COME UP IN EVERY FIELD...its really a difficult path!!)
This festival is till 15/3/2010...2 plays daily..which means 14 plays...
Name of them are...COLOMBO-COLOMBO...SAKUBAI...PUTALIKO GHAR...DHONHIYALA-ALIFULHU; A LOVE STORY......NAGAMANDALAM....JAANG AB NAHIN HOGI( a Pakistaani play....I MAY GO FOR IT ON THE 11th..??)....SADAKAINAYA JATAKA....DRAUPADI....THUS SPAKE SHOORPANAKHA,SO SAID SHAKUNI.....SALSAL AND SHAHMAAMA....BEHULAR BHASAN....SONATA...GALEM GI LU......!!!
