Games opening ceremony tickets yet to be sold
New Delhi, Oct 2 (IANS) Some of the high-priced tickets of the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony are yet to be sold, a day ahead of the mega event, an official said Saturday.
The tickets were priced at Rs.50,000, Rs.25,000, Rs.5,000 and Rs.1,000.
'We have sold all the tickets of Rs.1,000 and Rs.5,000. But tickets of Rs.25,000 and Rs.50,000 are still available,' said an official of the Organising Committee.
The two-hour ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium will highlight the rich cultural heritage of India.
The opening ceremony promises to be a mesmerising event, encapsulating 5,000 years of the country's culture with a total of 7,000 men, women and children performing in the programme. The fare is divided into six segments - Rhythm of India, Swagatam, Tree of Knowledge, Yoga, Great Indian Journey and Oscar winner composer A.R. Rahman's rendition of the CWG anthem 'Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto'.
With dances, drums, music, yoga and textiles all lined up, the sights, sounds and colours of India would be on show.
The guests would include New Zealand Governor General Sir Anand Satyanand, Monaco's Prince Albert II, Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed and Nauru President Marcus Stephen. Also present would be International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge.

New Delhi : From helicopters to snipers and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, the national capital will witness unprecedented security arrangements for any sports event ever in the country as the 19th Commonwealth Games starts rolling out on Sunday. Over 100,000 security personnel including gun-toting commandos have being deployed to thwart any threat to the sporting extravaganza.
Australian Sports Minister Mark Arbib, who had recently taken a round of the Games Village had said, "Security is very tight and even I had trouble getting in." While Delhi Police Commissioner YS Dadwal is the overall in charge of the security, the Home Ministry keeps a close tab on all arrangements with Home Minister P Chidambaram taking a keen interest.
Defence helicopters with commandos will do an aerial recce of the Games Village and stadiums at regular intervals. The helicopters will receive additional support from three Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) which will also be pressed into service to carry out surveillance and keep vigil at regular intervals.
According to various security agency sources, security personnel deployed for the Games include about 175 paramilitary companies (about 18,000 personnel) including 3,000 commandos, 100 anti-sabotage teams, 200 specially trained dogs and 15 bomb disposal squads.

Porbandar: Terming Allahabad High Court's verdict on Ayodhya land as a blessing from Mahatma Gandhi, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said the verdict is a good sign to realise Gandhji's ideology of 'Ram Rajya'.
Modi who offered prayers at Kirti Mandir, the birth place of Gandhiji on his birth anniversary, wrote in the visitor's book that the ruling is like blessings from Mahatma Gandhiji and the verdict is a good sign to realise Gandhiji's ideology of creating 'Ram Rajya'.
Allahabad High Court ruled that the 2.77 acre disputed land in Ayodhya be divided into three parts among Hindus and Muslims and held that the place where the makeshift temple of Lord Rama currently exists belongs to Hindus.
Modi also wrote that Gandhiji's thoughts are still a source of inspiration. "Mahatma Gandhi from his young days till he left the world lived with the name of Lord Ram. In the administrative sphere also he had suggested a concept of Ram Rajya," Modi said later talking to media.
"It is good that the verdict has come just two days ahead of Gandhi Jayanti and the issue which was pending for long has sorted out by the courts," Modi said. Modi also attend all religious prayers meet at the Kirti Mandir to mark Gandhiji's 141st birth anniversary. The chief minister then went straight to 'Shani Dev Mandir', 30 kms from Porbandar.

Mulayam's remarks on Ayodhya verdict evokes sharp response
Lucknow : Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh's remarks that the Muslim community felt cheated by the Ayodhya title suit verdict has evoked sharp reaction from the community leaders, who dubbed it "unwise" to make politically motivated statements at this time.
"The atmosphere at the national level has been positive with religious leaders of both communities, political leadership as well as the media. It would not be wise if politically motivated statements which could vitiate communal harmony are issued now," said Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangimahli, the Niab Imam of Idgah and member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board.
He said that it was heartening that "no one has so far shown immaturity... not even the Sangh Parivar and there should be restraint from now on to ensure that nothing is done which could give strength to fundamentalist forces." He said though there is disappointment among the community over the verdict, it is in the larger interest of the country and communal harmony that restraint should be exercised.
Echoing Firangimahli's views, Maulana Mohammad Umer of Islami research institute Darul Musinnfeen termed Yadav's statement "ill-timed". "Though he is expressing the views held by the community, the timing is not correct," Maulana Umer said.
Maulana Mohammad Mirza Athar of Shia Personal Law Board said that it was unbecoming of a senior leader like Mulayam Singh Yadav to issue such a statement at a time when everyone is trying their best to ensure peace and harmony.
"In a court case, there is bound to be one side on the losing side and after this verdict by the High Court, the option of approaching the Supreme Court or making an effort to resolve the issue through mutual understanding is still open and in this backdrop such statements are unnecessary," he said.
Noted Shia leader and member of the AIMPLB, Hamidul Hasan refused to comment on Yadav's statement, but appeal to everyone to desist from issuing statements which could hurt unity and peace of the country. Maulana Mohammad Mushtaq of the All India Sunni Board asserted that none of the Muslim leaders have said anything adverse on the verdict.
"It is the time to ensure peace and communal harmony and an appeal in this regard was also made after the Friday prayers to not politicise the issue", Mohammad Mushtaq added. The SP chief had yesterday said he was disappointed by the Ayodhya title suits verdict as he felt faith was given "priority" over legal procedures.

It is little surprise that Abhinav Bindra will be the flag-bearer for India at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. After all, participating teams are aware that they make a statement by such a choice. China, for example, often settles on its basketballers to lead the contingent into the stadium — it’s perhaps less to do with their height than to the Chinese devotion to basketball, never mind that the national team is not in the reckoning for the big titles.
For a country that adhered to a gradual ascent to the top of the medals tally at the Olympics, the choice nuances otherwise facile statements about assertions of great power status through sport. For India, too long an also-ran at the big events, performance of the flag-bearer is understandably key. And Bindra, who gained for India its first individual gold at the Olympics, embodies the national aspiration for recognition in single-competition sports.
The opening ceremony of the CWG has got top billing. The entertainment may be riveting as promised, but opening ceremonies inevitably pass the spotlight to the athletes. After the hysterics of past weeks, that should be a relief. It may serve as a reality-check for why this country went to such lengths to bring the competition to Delhi, why it put up (sometimes with a readiness bordering on the masochistic) with nit-picking by anyone who cared to have an opinion on its preparedness, and why the Games should be the beginning of a process for Indian sport and not the culmination of a last-minute dash to get the facilities ready on time.
For this country, the narrative about playing host is a bit different. And again, the China parallel is instructive. Countries like China and even South Korea have used their place in the medals tally to assert their bids for events like the Olympics and Asian Games, and thereby make a statement about how far the country has come -- China's economic clout, South Korea's democratic transition.
For India, such events have been brought home because of its place in the world, and the hope has always been that local sport will benefit. So it was that the first Asian Games were hosted by India; in fact, it was the Indian Olympic chapter which won the argument that Asia needed its own games. So perhaps it's with the CWG, and the enduring desire that our athletes' performance meet the country's aspirations. Let's give them the attention that's rightfully theirs.

NEW DELHI: Trains at an average frequency of 2.5 minutes, deployment of engineers from Germany and South Korea to ensure no technical glitches take place and information desks to help commuters and tourists.
These are some of the highlights of the Delhi Metro's Commonwealth Games 'Action Plan' which comes into effect from Sunday.
As the much-awaited Games begin on Sunday, Metro trains on the Central Secretariat-Badarpur corridor, which is likely to be operational from tomorrow morning, will run at a frequency of 2.25 minutes as it provides connectivity to the main CWG venue -- Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
With traffic police advising people to take Metro during the Games, Metro will run trains at a frequency of 3.40 minutes on Line 1 (Rithala-Rohini), Line 2 Central Secretariat to Gurgaon (2.30 min), Line 3 Dwaraka Sec 9-Noida City Centre (2.44 min), Line 6 Central Secretariat-Badarpur (2.25 min) and Line 5 Mundka-Indelok (5.11 min). Currently, the average frequency is 3.5 minutes to 4 minutes.
Metro will run a total of 181 trains -- 133 broad gauge and 48 standard gauge -- during the Games and will also deploy engineers from Germany and South Korea to ensure that there are no problems.
To control the crowd, about 250 scouts and Guides and 153 Bangalore Metro trainees will be deployed at various stations and volunteers of the Metro Citizens' Forum have also been instructed to be more vigilant and devote their time at the stations whenever possible, a DMRC spokesman said.
One Metro official of the grade of Assistant Station Manager will be posted at the control room of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee for better liaison and coordination, he said.
Stations like Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Vishvavidyalaya, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, and Jangpura have been decorated with pamphlets, hoardings and dangling that highlight the importance of the Games.
Additional ticket counters with pre vended tokens have been set up at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Jangpura Metro stations as they are adjacent to the JLN Stadium.
DMRC officials said all Metro stations will have 'Information Desks' to help commuters and give information they seek on Metro and related to the Games.
