CWG effect: Delhi Metro to run every 2.5 minutes

NEW DELHI: Trains at an average frequency of 2.5 minutes, deployment of engineers from Germany and South Korea to ensure no technical glitches take place and information desks to help commuters and tourists.

These are some of the highlights of the Delhi Metro's Commonwealth Games 'Action Plan' which comes into effect from Sunday.

As the much-awaited Games begin on Sunday, Metro trains on the Central Secretariat-Badarpur corridor, which is likely to be operational from tomorrow morning, will run at a frequency of 2.25 minutes as it provides connectivity to the main CWG venue -- Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

With traffic police advising people to take Metro during the Games, Metro will run trains at a frequency of 3.40 minutes on Line 1 (Rithala-Rohini), Line 2 Central Secretariat to Gurgaon (2.30 min), Line 3 Dwaraka Sec 9-Noida City Centre (2.44 min), Line 6 Central Secretariat-Badarpur (2.25 min) and Line 5 Mundka-Indelok (5.11 min). Currently, the average frequency is 3.5 minutes to 4 minutes.

Metro will run a total of 181 trains -- 133 broad gauge and 48 standard gauge -- during the Games and will also deploy engineers from Germany and South Korea to ensure that there are no problems.

To control the crowd, about 250 scouts and Guides and 153 Bangalore Metro trainees will be deployed at various stations and volunteers of the Metro Citizens' Forum have also been instructed to be more vigilant and devote their time at the stations whenever possible, a DMRC spokesman said.

One Metro official of the grade of Assistant Station Manager will be posted at the control room of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee for better liaison and coordination, he said.

Stations like Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Vishvavidyalaya, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, and Jangpura have been decorated with pamphlets, hoardings and dangling that highlight the importance of the Games.

Additional ticket counters with pre vended tokens have been set up at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Jangpura Metro stations as they are adjacent to the JLN Stadium.

DMRC officials said all Metro stations will have 'Information Desks' to help commuters and give information they seek on Metro and related to the Games.
