Put the cartoon back on the front page: Kalam to media
Last Updated: Sunday, June 24, 2007, 00:00
New Delhi, June 24: Put the cartoon back on the front page of newspapers and bring a smile to the face of the reader. This is President A P J Abdul Kalam's advice to the Indian media.
"On the first page, when you see a cartoon, it puts a smile on your face. The rest of the news is about things like rape, theft and killing. The man or the child or the woman is happy to see the cartoon. You must bring back the cartoon on the first page," Kalam said during an interaction with journalists at its headquarters here.
"A man or a woman should smile in the morning. Don't make him or her unhappy," he said.
The President recalled that as a young person, the first thing he would look at when he picked up a newspaper would be the cartoon on the front page. "What I loved on the first page was the cartoon," he said.
Kalam said the editors might love political news, but people hate it.
The President also said mediapersons need to see beyond the capital for news. "Delhi is not the only place where things are happening," he said.

Economics: The first chapter in improving Indo-Pak relations
Economics: The first chapter in improving Indo-Pak relations
Once upon a time, the region that is now modern day Pakistan was South Asia's prime trading hub. Be it during the time of the Indus Valley civilization, the Taxila Buddhist kingdoms, the Muslim fiefdoms or the Sikh empire, the region linked the markets of Iran and Central Asia in the West to those in India, China and Burma in the East. The land was a link and a source for the spread of commerce and culture in South Asia. After the creation of Pakistan, the nation has successfully strove to live up to the region's legacy creating important links with its age old trading partners. However, with its alienated sibling, India, Pakistan has been unable to stimulate the lucrative trade of the past.
Soon after their creation in 1947, India and Pakistan were healthy trading partners. India served as a market for half of Pakistan's exports of agricultural produce and minerals, and supplied a significant share of its imports consisting of manufactured goods. Pakistan was snubbed by India in 1949 when it couldn't match the devaluation of the Indian rupee which caused a damaging imbalance of trade. The wars of 1965 and 1971 and the uprising in Kashmir in the 1990s sidetracked bilateral trade with the monumental task of resolving land disputes. The situation was made worse by military dictatorships in Pakistan and a xenophobic sense of nationalism on both sides.
According to the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Indo-Pak bilateral trade stood at $2.75 billion last year, but has the potential to rise up to $10 billion in the next four years. Trade primarily involves a trickle of trucks carrying perishable goods, sports goods, processed food products, machinery, and staple cotton amongst others across the Line of Control. It also includes expensive and time consuming transit trade via Middle Eastern capitals like Dubai and Tehran.
However, since last year, Pakistan seems to be on a changing curve, and India's advances to boost bilateral trade are being warmly welcomed by Pakistan Inc. After the fall of the Musharraf regime in 2008, the Pakistan People's Party headed by President Asif Ali Zardari took the reins of the Central government. By next year, it will be the first democratically elected government in the history of the nation to complete a full term. Sustained democracy seems to have had a sobering effect of the state of affairs in Pakistan, where the government has realized the responsibility of placating cross border tensions with India through a win-win scenario of boosting bilateral trade. This change has been openly welcomed by the Indian government and the Indian business community. Both nations seek to establish a relationship similar to Sino-Indian diplomacy, where border disputes are made second priority to the economic advantages of bilateral trade.
The reform agenda was actually initiated in January 2004 at the 12th SAARC summit in Islamabad when member states signed the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA), where the non-LDC - Least Developed Countries - of Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India agreed to reduce their tariffs to 0-5 per cent by 2013. However, the commitments were put on hold up until last year. In September 2011, Pakistan's Commerce Minister, Makhdoom Amin Fahim met his Indian counterpart, Anand Sharma to kick start the talks to normalize trade. Fahim became Pakistan's first Commerce Minister to visit India in 35 years. The Trade Ministries of India and Pakistan made a joint statement to lay out a timeline in November for removing all non-tariff barriers and implement their SAFTA obligations. In November, Pakistan took a historic step granting 'Most Favoured Nation' status to India. Pakistan announced its plans to cut its Negative goods trade list to open up its domestic markets to Indian businesses. Complementing the move, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh immediately announced his intention to move towards a Preferential Trade Agreement with Pakistan under SAFTA that will lead to zero customs duty on all traded goods by 2016. In December, India and Pakistan's Trade ministries ended 6 rounds of talks, charting a plan to implement the Preferential Trading Agreement. The talks included negotiations to prune Pakistan's long 'Negative list' for imported goods, opening trading points along the Indo-Pak border, allowing cross border baking services, and implementing a liberal visa regime. However, in February 2012, the Pakistan government deferred its decision to prune its Negative List after prominent politicians raised concerns of Indian goods flooding Pakistan's markets and hampering its domestic industries. Nonetheless, India took a patient stance. The FICCI President RV Kanoria stated that India needed to 'accommodate' Pakistan to achieve lucrative trade relations. The same month, Anand Sharma became India's first Commerce Minister to visit Pakistan in 64 years. Sharma achieved a commitment from Pakistan's Trade Ministry to boost trade to $6 billion in the next three years, and started talks on opening border trading points at the Attari-Wagah border and Mona Bao in Rajasthan. Towards the end of the talks, Pakistan's Trade Ministry made a statement announcing to put in place a small Negative List by the end of the month, and made a commitment to phase out the Negative List by the end of 2012. In March, Pakistan's Petroleum and Natural Resources Secretary, Muhammad Ejaz Chaudhry held talks with his Indian counterpart GC Chaturvedi, during the 7th Asian Gas Partnership Summit in New Delhi. Both agreed to focus to speed up the completion of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project and facilitate a quid pro quo trade of Indian oil and Pakistani cement and chemicals.
Moving beyond diplomatic dialogue, Trade ministers Makhdoom Amin Fahim and Anand Sharma inaugurated the "Pakistan Lifestyle" show at Pragati Maidan on Thursday. The expo will run till the 15th of April and will showcase the work of over 100 world famous brands and designers from Pakistan in a diversity of fields including fashion textiles, marble ornaments, handicrafts, food products, leather goods and designer furniture. The event is jointly organised by the Indian Trade Promotion Organisation and the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan. On Friday, an Integrated Check Post was inaugurated at the Attari-Wagah border to boost the volume of cross border trade. The ICP will allow 10 times the current 200 trucks which cross the border checkpoint daily. Moreover, on the same day, Anand Sharma announced that the Indian government had taken an 'in-principle' decision to allow Foreign Direct Investment from Pakistan. The nation is the only country on the negative list under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, which bars it from investing in India. The Indian government removed Sri Lanka from the list in 2006 and Bangladesh in 2007. The department of industrial policy and promotion has proposed that investments from Pakistan be examined on a case by case basis to verify the source and the end use of funds.
From negotiations, informal meets, photo-ops to trade fairs, the year has been full of consistently good signs for India-Pakistan trade relations, barring apprehensions from Islamabad and a 'policy statement' - policy implementation imbalance. Democracy, as we know and Pakistan may have realised, makes ground breaking decisions rather tediously. Nonetheless, it's an important means to address the concerns of all stakeholders and achieve lucrative relations for both countries.
It will be a momentous day in history when a house in India is built with Pakistani cement and a harvester in Pakistan is run by Indian petrol. Economic cooperation can set the foundation for the active cross-border movement of intangible industries like education, theater, music, film and art. The progression of such cooperation can nurture economic, social and cultural solidarity between India and Pakistan. It can establish strong ties, the promise of a lasting peace, and bring two extremely similar yet estranged societies closer together for the prosperity and welfare of future generations.

Summit over, Obama looks to domestic concerns
By JIM KUHNHENN, Associated Press – 36 minutes ago
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is returning to his familiar agenda of righting the U.S. economy and winning a second presidential term, wrapping up three days of Latin American summitry that yielded mixed results and were clouded by a Secret Service scandal.
Domestic issues are immediately on tap, with the Senate scheduled to vote Monday on Obama's proposal to increase taxes on millionaires. The proposal stands little chance of passing Congress, but Obama has cast it as an election-year theme as he seeks to paint sharp contrasts between himself and his likely Republican challenger, Mitt Romney.
Obama returned to Washington late Sunday with a key free trade deal with Colombia ready to be fully enforced next month and with important face time with Latin American leaders that cannot hurt his diplomatic outreach.
But the weekend trip to Cartagena, Colombia, for the sixth Summit of the Americas also underscored old and new fissures that exist between the United States and its southern neighbors, from the U.S. isolation of Cuba to calls by some Latin American leaders to defang the violent drug cartels by legalizing drugs.
The trip was clouded by unseemly allegations against Secret Service personnel and military service members working on security in Cartagena ahead of Obama's arrival. Obama, at a news conference in Cartagena, said that if the accusations, proved true "of course I'll be angry."
The Secret Service sent 11 agents home and placed them on leave for misconduct as the agency investigates what happened. Five members of the military working with the Secret Service were confined to quarters, pending an investigation into an alleged prostitution scandal.
"I expect that investigation to be thorough, and I expect it to be rigorous," Obama said. "We are representing the people of the United States, and when we travel to another country, I expect us to observe the highest standards."
The story could also be kept alive in Congress where at least one Republican committee chairman suggested the scandal may not be an isolated incident.
Obama began moving forward to domestic issues even as he was still wrapping up business in Cartagena. At the news conference, with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos at his side, Obama mounted a vigorous defense of his tax proposals.
"I want everybody to remember, I'm going to say this repeatedly: This is not an argument about taking from A to give to B. This is not a redistributionist argument that we're making. We're making an argument about how do we grow the economy so that it's going to be prospering in this competitive 21st century environment," he said.

Situation has improved exceptionally in Jammu n Kashmir:Quality of intelligence and personnel must improve, says PM
Quality of intelligence and personnel must improve, says PM
by FP Staff 55 mins ago
10.37am: The Prime Minister has reiterated the centre’s efforts towards improving capacity building in the police forces so that they can better combat the threats facing India’s internal security. He said it is important for the government to find ways and means to improve the quality of personnel and called upon Chief Ministers to come up with viable suggestions to do this.
10.35am: The Prime Minister is now addressing the challenges of terrorism and the importance of improving intelligence to counter it. “We need giant and coordinated efforts to deal with the challenge of terrorism, whatever be its origin be it external or internal, whatever its motivation. This is a struggle in which we cannot relax”, he said. The PM has also outlined the efforts taken by the centre to improve intelligence and confirmed that the NCTC would be discussed on 5 May.
10.27am: The Prime Minister has said that the threats faced by India today include terrorism, extremism, Naxalism and communal violence. “These issues must be tackled firmly but with sensitivity. The forces behind them should not only be contained but also effectively rolled back and is an endeavor that requires an united effort by the centre and states. Internal security is a matter where states and centre must work hand in hand”, he said. The Premier added that 2011 was a better year than 2010 in terms of the number of deaths caused by Left Wing Extremist groups, but added that we still have a long way to go.
10.23am: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh begins speaking at the inauguration of the conference.
10.20am: Home Minister P Chidambaram has said that the CPI(M) Maoists have used every democratic tool at their disposal to threaten the internal security of India, be it through bandhs, or asserting their right to the freedom of expression. He said that even while implementing a democratic strategy of police actiona nd developmental action, some means must be found to blunt the propaganda tools employed by the naxals.
10.15am: Chidambaram has said that Left wing extremism is a formidable threat, and that Assam has become the ‘newest theatre of Maoist violence’. He said that violence continues unabated and that though it has largely been agreed that a two pronged strategy of police action and developmental work is the best way to combat the threat, the governments capacity to execute these plans was not commiserate.
Chidamabaram stated that the integrated action plan inaugurated in November 2010 has been an outstanding success, but said “still we do not have the upper hand because there are not enough police stations, personnel or equipment.” The Home Minister also pledged the support and commitment of the central government to mitigating the Naxal threat.
10.07am: Home Minister P Chidambaram begins his welcome address, thanking Chief Minister’s for their participation. Chidambaram says that in his opinion, it is state governments who are at the frontline of ensuring internal security. He says that 2011 has seen relatively less violence than preceding years but cautions that state Ministers ought not to be lulled. He said that the extermination of religion was a worrying trend, where Indian citizens were seen supporting terrorists because of their religion.
10.00am: The Chief Minister’s meet on internal security has got underway in Delhi, where a range of issues on internal security are set to be discussed. The issues scheduled to be taken up for discussion include amendments to the Border Security Forces Act, The Armed Forces Special Powers Act and the dangers posed by Naxalism in certain states of the country.
The day-long conference will also deliberate on how India is being affected due to its troubled neighbourhood and its obvious consequences in the country like cross border terrorism, covert support to insurgents, arms smuggling, circulation of fake Indian currency notes, inflow of refugees and immigration.
Active terror infrastructure in Pakistan, growing nexus between the Naxals and anti-India forces both within the country as well as abroad, better intelligence sharing among security forces, Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & System (CCTNS), border management, coastal security and other Centre-State issues will also figure prominently at the meeting where Home Minister P Chidambaram will deliver the opening address.
A separate session on Maoist violence will be held later in the day and will be attended by Chief Ministers of nine Maoist violence affected states.
The Central government has already conceded the demands of several non-Congress Chief Ministers, including ally Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, to hold a special meeting of Chief Ministers to exclusively discuss on the controversial issue of the proposed National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) on 5 May.
So, the issue is unlikely to figure prominently on Monday. Sources in Kolkata on Sunday said Banerjee will not attend Monday’s chief ministers’ meeting on internal security, but will take part in the CMs’ meeting on NCTC.
No reason has been assigned for the West Bengal Chief Minister’s decision.
In place of the Chief Minister, Finance Minister Amit Mitra will represent the state government at the meeting, which has been convened by the Union Home Ministry, the source told PTI.
Though the internal security situation has vastly improved during the last three years largely because of cooperation between the Centre and the state governments, Naxalism continues to remains a grave challenge which claimed nearly 600 lives in 2011, official sources said.
The country’s top leadership will review the two-pronged approach of development and police action to contain the Maoist problem and the future strategy to deal with it. With communal violence becoming a major cause of concern for the government as 2,420 such incidents have reported from across the country in last three years where at least 427 people lost their lives, the issue is likely to be flagged by the Home Minister in the meeting since the sensitive matter needs urgent attention from all quarters.
Situation in Jammu and Kashmir, which has witnessed relative peace in recent times, will be discussed intensively and how to meet the challenge of maintaining peace for longer period in the sensitive state.
The challenge posed by insurgent groups, especially in the Northeastern states, and how to bring them to the negotiating table will be discussed.
Chidambaram is expected to present a report on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast and how it has been changed dramatically with close coordination of central and state governments.
As the Home Ministry has flagged capacity building as the area on focus in 2012, the issue will get priority in the conference and discuss how the Centre can help the states in filling up vacancies, augmenting arms, ammunitions and modernisation of their forces.
The conference, originally scheduled for February 15, had to be postpone for two months due to the recent Assembly elections in five states and Budget session of Parliament.

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari's day long visit to India gave everyone a moment to talk about, from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to the press photographers on high alert outside 7RCR, even the head priest at the shrine of Moinuddin Chisti at Ajmer, but the real question still remains - will Zardari's visit translate into more concrete resolution of the issues straining the relationship between the two neighbours. Signalling a positive outcome, Manmohan Singh and Pakistan Zardari on Sunday (April 8) said the two countries are willing to find "practical, pragmatic" solutions to a "number of issues" affecting the bilateral relationship.

In a potential game-changer in volatile bilateral ties, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday accepted an invitation to visit Pakistan, with India indicating that concrete actions against anti-India terrorists and a speedier resolution of less contentious issues like disputes over the Siachen glacier and Sir Creek marshland could form the showpiece of the much-awaited trip.
India and Pakistan, which resumed their dialogue in February last year after a post 26/11 pause, moved a step closer to their “common desire” of normalising relations after a businesslike lunch and 40 minutes one-one-talks talks between visiting Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Manmohan Singh here.
Zardari touched down here in the morning on a six-hour private visit cloaked as a pilgrimage to the Sufi shrine at Ajmer in Rajasthan.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, right, waves as his son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, left, looks on while arriving at the Palam Airfield in New Delhi, India. APManmohan Singh pressed Pakistan to bring the perpetrators of the Mumbai terror spree to justice and act against 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed, who is continuing with his hate India speeches with impunity, but the talks largely focused on mapping out a forward-looking agenda focusing around trade and the peace dividend that will ensue.
In a sign of paradigm shift, Zardari invoked the “India-China” model for bilateral ties, which entails focusing on scaling up trade while resolving more complex outstanding issues like Kashmir in a step-by-step incremental fashion.
Manmohan Singh acknowledged that Pakistan was moving forward on trade issues – a reference to Islamabad’s movement in the direction of granting New Delhi the Most Favoured Nation status – as both leaders agreed to tap economic potential for trade and investment and broaden economic agenda between the two countries.
In a step forward, the two leaders directed their home secretaries to discuss the issue of terror and sign a pact on easing the visa regime.
After a warm handshake and clasp and smiles for the media, the two leaders sat down for talks, which Manmohan Singh said were “very constructive and friendly.”
Manmohan Singh surprised many when he announced, at a joint appearance with Zardari, that he would be “very happy” to visit Pakistan, the most positive indication so far that the Pakistan-born Indian prime minister could after all go on his maiden visit to the neighbouring country.
“President Zardari has also invited me to visit Pakistan … I would be very happy to visit Pakistan on a mutually convenient date,” said Manmohan Singh, who was born in the village in Gah in Pakistani Punjab.
If the visit takes place, it will be the first by an Indian prime minister to Pakistan in the last eight years. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the last Indian prime minister to visit Pakistan in 2004.
Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai, briefing reporters later, said: “Terrorism is a major issue by which people will India will judge the dialogue process.
“This will be factored into when deciding the timing of the visit,” an official elaborated.
The prime minister raised the issue of terrorism and conveyed to the Pakistan president that it “was imperative that perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack be brought to justice,” Mathai said.
Responding to India’s concerns, Zardari said that Pakistan is as much a victim of terrorism as India and said that there “were some legal issues” on the Pakistani side.
“The relation between India and Pakistan should become normal, that’s our common desire,” Manmohan Singh said. He stressed that the two sides were “willing to find practical, pragmatic solutions” to all issues dogging their ties “and that’s the message that President Zardari and I would wish to convey.”
Greeting the Indian people with a “Salaam Walaykum,” a beaming Zardari stressed that India and Pakistan are neighbours and “we will like to have better relations with India”.
“We have spoken about every issue we could have spoken about,” Zardari, who was dressed nattily in a black suit with a red tie, said. Manmohan Singh was dressed in his usual kurta-churidar and a grey Nehru jacket.
Zardari said he hoped to see Manmohan Singh on Pakistan soil soon. His son Bilawal, dressed in a black pathani suit, was standing behind him as Zardari addressed the media.
Manmohan Singh was invited to visit Pakistan by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul March 27, and had replied that he would visit only if something “solid” was achievable.
Although no timeline has been set for the visit, government sources indicated that there was a strong possibility of Manmohan Singh visiting Pakistan, but added caveats that the timing will depend upon Islamabad’s actions on 26/11 justice and the progress in resolving issues like Sir Creek on India’s western border and further movement on trade.
In a step forward, sources indicated that issues like the disputed marshland are doable and a resolution of this issue could form the substantial outcome that could be flaunted as a showpiece during Manmohan Singh’s likely visit.
Pakistan has been pressing India for long to resolve doable issues like Siachen and Sir Creek, but India had said more time was required. Sources, however, Sunday indicated that Sir Creek could be resolved, while Siachen may take some more time.

PM Manmohan Singh will not mince words on 26/11 Mumbai terror attack when he meets Asif Ali Zardari...
NEW DELHI: In a potential paradigm shift in bilateral ties, Pakistan on Sunday agreed with India to adopt the "India-China model" in negotiating their sensitive relationship, which entails focusing on scaling up trade while resolving outstanding issues in a "step-by-step" incremental manner.
After holding 40-minutes of one-on-one talks at the prime minister's 7 Race Course Road residence, the discussions extended over a lavish lunch involving senior ministers and officials from both sides.
At the lunch, Zardari told Manmohan Singh that India and China have many differences, but their trade ties are going up, said government sources. Zardari indicated, said sources, that that the India-China model could help improve the relations between India and Pakistan as well.
In their talks also preceding lunch, Manmohan Singh and Zardari agreed on the need to tap economic potential and the need for positive movement in the direction of liberalising trade, said the sources.
India has been pitching for the India-China model in talks with Pakistani interlocutors for a long time, a model endorsed by Beijing, but Islamabad had not responded enthusiastically as its political establishment saw Kashmir as the "core issue" that needed to be resolved before trade normalisation can take place.
But in the past few months, with Pakistan moving in the direction of granting India the Most Favoured Nation status, the Kashmir-first-and-trade-later equation has been reversed in favour of simultaneously pursuing both trade and discussions on the contentious Kashmir issue, over which the two nations have fought three wars.
The India-China model, said sources, could be a potential game-changer in the accident-prone India-Pakistan relationship as it envisages a pragmatic approach to keep working at enhancing economic ties that benefits both countries while taking a long-strategic range view to resolve complex outstanding issues like Kashmir.
Despite the decades-long boundary dispute, India and China, the two rising Asian powers, have managed to scale up bilateral ties to over $70 billion and set an ambitious target of $100 billion by 2015.
Compared to that, bilateral trade between India and Pakistan stood at a mere $2.7 billion, with trade balance heavily in favour of India. The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) has predicted that trade between may touch $10 billion by 2015, if trade and investment barriers are removed.
Manmohan Singh underlined this new spirit of pragmatism in ties after talks with Zardari. "We are willing to find practical, pragmatic solutions" to all issues dogging their ties "and that's the message that President Zardari and I would wish to convey," he said.
In his conversation with Zardari, Manmohan Singh stressed that the two countries needed to make progress on every issues step by step, an incremental approach that was also welcomed by the Pakistani side, said the sources.
This is in stark contrast to the dialogue in Islamabad between their foreign ministers in July 2010 when the talks collapsed because then Pakistan's foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi insisted on unrealistic deadlines for resolving issues like Kashmir, Siachen and Sir Creek.
Manmohan Singh, who has invested much diplomatic capital in turning around the volatile India-Pakistan relations, has been an eloquent advocate of greater trade and people-to-people contacts which, he has stressed, will make the borders irrelevant.
Capping years of negotiations, home secretaries of India and Pakistan are set to sign a visa liberalisation agreement soon that will ease travel between people of the two countries.

NEW DELHI: Signalling a positive outcome, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday said the two countries were willing to find "practical, pragmatic" solutions to a "number of issues" affecting the bilateral relationship.
Emerging after a 30-minute one-on-one meeting, both Singh and Zardari gave press statements where they expressed "satisfaction" over their deliberations.
"I and President Zardari had constructive and friendly exchanges of views on bilateral issues which affects relationship between India and Pakistan," Singh said.
After landing here at 12.10 pm at Palam Air Force Base (technical area) along with his son Bilawal Bhutto, Zardari drove straight to Singh's official Race Course Road residence.
Zardari, who had expressed his desire to come on a "private visit" to go to Ajmer to pay obeisance at the shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, was invited by Singh to join him for lunch. The invitation was accepted by Zardari.
"I have taken advantage of this visit to discuss with him all bilateral issues and I am very satisfied with the outcome of this visit," the Prime Minister said while admitting that there were number of issues between the two countries.
"We have a number of issues and we are willing to find practical and pragmatic solutions to all those issues and that is the message President Zardari and I would wish to convey," Singh said.
We have had "very fruitful" bilateral talks, said Zardari, who also hoped to meet the Indian leader on Pakistani soil very soon. The Pakistan President invited Singh to visit his country.
"I would be very happy to visit Pakistan on a mutually convenient date," Singh said.
The Pakistan President was warmly received by Singh after reaching the Prime Minister's residence and both the leaders posed for shutterbugs.
"I would like to wish the people of India 'as-salam walekum' from the President of Pakistan. I am grateful to the Prime Minister for inviting me for lunch though I am on a private visit here but we have had some fruitful bilateral talks together," Zardari said.
The Pakistan President, who is on a day-long visit to India, said the two countries are neighbours.
"We would like to have better relations with India. We have spoken on all topics that we could have spoken about and we are hoping to meet on Pakistani soil very soon," he said.
There was no structured agenda for the meeting between Singh and Zardari.
Meanwhile, cranking up pressure on Pakistan, the Prime Minister made it clear to President Zardari that action needs to be taken against Hafiz Saeed and other perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks, which will be a key factor to judge progress in bilateral ties.
Terrorism figured prominently during Singh's one-on-one meeting with Zardari.
"The leaders discussed the problem of terrorism which is a major issue by which the Indian people will judge progress in bilateral relationship," Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai told reporters here.
Singh told Zardari that it was "imperative" to bring the perpetrators of Mumbai attacks to justice and prevent activities aimed against India from Pakistani soil.

Vijender qualifies for London Olympics, says he's back...GOOD WISHES
Agencies : New Delhi, Sun Apr 08 2012, 16:03 hrs
Vijender Singh (75kg) became the first Indian boxer to qualify for the Olympic Games for a third successive time after reaching the semifinals of the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Astana, Kazakhstan today.
The first Indian to win an Olympic and World Championships medal -- bronze in both events – Vijender outpunched Chuluuntumur Tumurkhuyag of Mongolia 27-17 to not just assure himself of an Olympic berth but also a medal at the ongoing tournament.
"I am back," were Vijender's first words while speaking to PTI from Astana after winning the crucial bout, a loss in which would have ended his hopes of making the London Games.
The 26-year-old had failed in his first attempt to book a ticket for London in last year's World Championships.
"I have answered all my critics, who said that I was finished (after losing in the first round of World Championships)," said the former world number one, who was gasping for breath after a draining encounter.
Before the 2008 Beijing Games, Vijender had won gold at the Asian Qualifiers at that time, which incidentally were also held in Kazakhstan.
"I will now give it my all in the Olympics and prove that I am the best. It's such a relief to have got qualified. The fact that I am the first Indian boxer to have qualified for a third successive Olympics makes it all the more special," he said.
Vijender, a former World Championships bronze-medallist, had defeated Syria's Ishak Waez in his pre-quarterfinal bout after getting an opening-round bye.
"His fitness and endurance were a revelation in today's bout. He took me by surprise with the intensity with which he fought," said national coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu.
"I don't have words to describe how well he fought. It was a fantastic display by a proven talent," he added.
Vijender had lost in the preliminaries of 2004 Athens Games but went on to clinch a bronze in the Beijing edition.
With his qualification for London, Vijender became the fifth Indian boxer to book a berth for the mega event.
India already have four Olympic berths through L Devendro Singh (49kg), Jai Bhagwan (60kg), Manoj Kumar (64kg) and Vikas Krishan (69kg) who grabbed their slots after reaching the quarterfinals of the World Championships last year.

Of these, Vikas went on to clinch a bronze in the biennial event -- only the second boxer after Vijender to achieve the feat.
Nuclear-armed foes Pakistan, India talk peace over lunch
Nuclear-armed foes Pakistan, India talk peace over lunch

NEW DELHI | Sun Apr 8, 2012 8:19am EDT
(Reuters) - Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stood together in New Delhi on Sunday, adding weight to peace efforts by the nuclear-armed foes with the first visit by a Pakistani head of state to India in seven years.
Relations have warmed since Pakistan promised its neighbor most favored nation trade status last year, although a $10 million bounty offered by Washington for a Pakistani Islamist blamed for the 2008 attacks on Mumbai has stirred old grievances.
The leaders discussed Kashmir, theatre of two of three wars between India and Pakistan, as well as terrorism and trade during a 40-minute meeting on their own before sharing lunch, India's Foreign Secretary Rajan Mathai told reporters.
"We would like to have better relations with India. We have spoken on all topics that we could have spoken about and we are hoping to meet on Pakistani soil very soon," Zardari told a briefing as they emerged from Singh's residence.
Singh said he hoped to make his first visit to Pakistan at a convenient date.
"Relations between India and Pakistan should become normal. That's our common desire," he said. "We have a number of issues and we are willing to find tactical, pragmatic solutions to all those issues and that's the message that president Zardari and I would wish to convey."
Zardari then headed to the shrine in western India of a revered Sufi Muslim saint seen as a symbol of harmony between South Asia's often competing religions.
On his first visit to India as part of the 40-member delegation, Zardari's son, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, stood behind the leaders, in a sign of his growing role in politics.
Mathai said Singh offered Zardari India's help in finding 124 Pakistani soldiers and 11 civilians engulfed by an avalanche on Saturday near the 6,000-meter-high (18,500-foot) Siachen glacier in Kashmir - known as the world's highest battlefield.
Zardari thanked Singh but did not immediately respond to the offer to help rescue teams, backed by helicopters and sniffer dogs combing an area one-km (half a mile) wide with snow up to 80 feet deep. Hundreds have died at Siachen over the years, mainly from the inhospitable conditions.
A foreign ministry source said the timing of any visit by Singh to Pakistan will depend on issues including a conflict over the oil-rich Sir Creek river estuary, one of their longest running disputes.
MUMBAI ATTACK
Singh told Zardari it was imperative to bring to justice the perpetrators of a 2008 attack on India's financial capital, Mumbai - a three-day gun and bomb rampage by 10 Pakistani militants that left 166 dead and derailed the peace process.
Talks only resumed last year.
The Indian prime minister raised the continued freedom of Hafiz Saeed, the Islamist suspected of masterminding the attack. Saeed will be discussed again at a forthcoming meeting between home ministry officials, Mathai said.
India is furious Pakistan has not detained Saeed, despite handing over evidence against him. Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Friday that anyone with concrete proof to prosecute Saeed should present it to the courts.
Relaxed visa rules will be signed at the same meeting of officials. Pakistan is expected to formally designate India as a most-favored-nation later this year.
With Zardari and Singh both suffering major domestic problems, prospects are low for fixing the Kashmir stand-off.
Lasting Pakistan-India peace would go a long way to smoothing a perilous transition in Afghanistan as most NATO combat forces prepare to leave by the end of 2014.
India and Pakistan fought their most recent war in 1999, shortly after both sides declared they possessed nuclear weapons. Hundreds died on the defacto border in Kashmir before Pakistani troops and militants were forced to withdraw.
Born in a village in what is now Pakistan, Singh has pushed for peace during his two terms in office, but his efforts were knocked off track by the 2008 ouster of former President Pervez Musharraf, with whom he had built trust, and the Mumbai raids.
Informal meetings, during international cricket matches, or in this case before Zardari's pilgrimage to the Sufi shrine, have become the hallmark of Singh's diplomacy.
In November, Singh met Gilani in the Maldives and promised to open a new chapter in their history. Hopes are focused on boosting trade and tourism, and resolving the conflict at the Siachen glacier and Sir Creek in the west.
Musharraf, the last Pakistani head of state to visit India in 2005, has said both issues were as good as fixed while he was in office.

Mr Zardari, will you protect Hindus in Pakistan?

Tarun Vijay, the BJP MP, would like to ask President Asif Ali Zardari 'Is the ease available to a Pakistani Muslim to visit his places of faith in India also available to an Indian Hindu to visit his places of worship in Pakistan?'
The Zardari visit has created so much of noise on the television news channels and chatteratti addas in other media that this hype defies any logic.
Since he is coming to India on a private visit, and badly bruised at home, he is naturally seeking some solace. He must be welcomed and given all honours due to a foreign head of State. Period.
The expectations and hopes end there.
He is neither in control of his nation nor do we have a prime minister who can discuss business over a biryani session.
Since Asif Ali Zardari is not on a secular mission, I may like to ask him: Is the ease and smoothness available to a Pakistani Muslim to visit his places of faith in India, so well protected and kept in the best of shape, also available to an Indian Hindu to visit his places of worship in Pakistan?
A couple of weeks ago, I was in Pakistan as part of a high-level delegation led by our learned and suave Lok Sabha Speaker [ Images ] Mrs Meira Kumar [ Images ]. In spite of my request, made in advance, in India and even after reaching Pakistan, to visit at least one Hindu temple in Lahore [ Images ], (I didn't mention Islamabad [ Images ], as it has none), the Pakistani authorities could not show me even one temple.
When in Islamabad I asked Chaudhry Shujat Hussain, a veteran friend of India and president of the Pakistan Muslim League, about the renovation promised by the then Pakistan government on the famous Katas Raj temple, in the wake of Mr L K Advani's [ Images ] visit, he replied, 'We are trying to have the work started. I have written to the prime minister that at least he should now begin something there.'
This is the state of promises made by a government which seeks friendship with a Hindu majority India.
Forget Hafiz Saeed [ Images ]. The United States will take care of him. But can't we, the meek seekers of Most Favoured Nation status and believers in the principle of a trader that increased trade will also increase the chances of peace and enhance trust, ask Mr Zardari whether he can ensure that an innocent Sarabjeet Singh is released and sent back home?
The proof that Sarabjeet Singh is a victim of mistaken identity is accepted by all, even in Pakistan, but a hate-ridden atmosphere and weak governance has not enabled a bold decision.
The other issue that needs to be taken up during the biryani lunch with Mr Zardari is to make an appeal to save the honour, faith and life of Rinkel Kumari, a brave Hindu girl of Sindh who became another victim of mullahs who converted her against her will.
Her statement in the supreme court of Pakistan must be read by everyone who believes in basic human rights. She told the court that even at the cost of death, she would not abandon her Hindu Dharma.
A report by Jibran Khan, titled 'Hindu girl to Pak SC: Rather die than convert to Islam' (http://www.asianews.it/news-en/Hindu-girl-tells-Supreme-Court-she-would-rather-die-than-convert-to-Islam-24358.html) says that 'Seized by an influential Muslim, with the "political cover" of an elected official, 19-year-old Rinkel Kumari launches a desperate appeal to the courts.'
Each year there are 300 forced marriages and conversions in Pakistan.
'In Pakistan there is justice only for Muslims, justice is denied to Hindus. Kill me here, now, in court. But do not send me back to the Darul-Aman... kill me.' This is the desperate, heartbreaking, plea by Rinkel Kumari, who has entrusted her heartfelt appeal to the judges of the Pakistan supreme court in Islamabad.
Her story is similar to that of many other young women and girls belonging to religious minorities in Pakistan -- Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Ahmadis -- kidnapped by extremist groups or individuals, who convert them by force and then marry them. And that is what the girl said on March 26, before the supreme court judges.
'The drama of Rinkel Kumari, a student of Mirpur Mathelo, a small village in Sindh, began the evening of February 24. A handful of men seized her and delivered her a few hours later to a wealthy Muslim scholar. The man then called her parents, warning them that their daughter "wants to convert to Islam".'
'Nand Lal, the girl's father, a teacher of an elementary school, accused Naveed Shah, an influential Muslim, of kidnapping his daughter. The man has the "political cover" provided by Mian Mittho, an elected National Assembly member...'
After identifying those responsible for his daughter's kidnapping, Nand Lal was compelled to leave the village. 'The father found refuge and welcome in a gurdwara in Lahore, in Punjab [ Images ] province, with the rest of his family.'
If America can take up the fight for Mukhtaran Mai and the Western media go all out to help her struggle against savage Mullahism, why can't India speak out for Rinkel Kumari, whose story is a spine-chilling account of Pakistan's hate? I know none from the Indian media will ever go to Rinkel Kumari's village or try to interview her and her unfortunate parents.
Atrocities on Hindus is not news for a Hindu-dominated media nor a politically correct issue for politicians who cross all limits to speak for the pain and suffering of Palestinians, Sri Lankan Tamils and Bosnian and Chechnya Muslims.
This is a strange situation in the Indian media and politics, where a Hindu is considered to be appreciated and sympathised with only when s/he is acting against Hindu sensitivities.
Maybe Mr Zardari would like to answer these questions while he is on a prayer mission in India.

Manmohan and Zardari: Leaders in search of a ‘peace legacy’

Hafiz Saeed, and the perils of Indo-Pak ‘tandoor’ diplomacy
Saeed not focus of talks with Singh: Zardari
On the menu for today’s lunch that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is hosting for the visiting Pakistani President will be goshtaba, a Kashmiri meatball prepared with curd and curry, and dosa-avial from the South of India.
Yet, on the big question of whether a roadmap for peace between India and Pakistan will be on the menu of the one-on-one talks that the two leaders will hold, without note-takers, before the lunch, there isn’t great clarity.
In many ways, both Singh and Zardari have very little wiggle room to negotiate anything dramatic; and for all their personable persona, both leaders have little political goodwill in their respective countries to be able to hardsell any grand vision.
What can they deliver? Reuters
Yet, curiously, just the fact that both leaders are at a crossroads in their respective political career gives them an incentive to draw up a roadmap for peace that would represent their “combined legacy”.
According to some media accounts, the precise details of such an outcome may not be made known immediately, but it wold reside as a template for the next-generation of leaders of the two countries can draw inspiration from.
In that context, media hype is centred on the likely meeting of “next-generation leaders” from both side. Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi and Zardari’s son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari are to attend the lunch, and according to media accounts will likely “hit it off” despite the age gap: Rahul Gandhi is 41, Bilawal is just 23.
Precisely what perspective these pampered dynasts can bring to the strained and complex Indo-Pakistan relations is hard to fathom, but that hasn’t inhibited the media from gushing about the meeting of the “yuvrajs”
The Times of India reported breathlessly, citing a government official, that at their first meeting, Bilawal and Rahul Gandhi would have enough time over lunch to talk and “get to know each other better.”
The Telegraph reports, citing unidentified sources, that at their talks both Singh and Zardari will look to draw up a “forward looking” roadmap for peace. The effort will be to avoid subjects that would embarrass the other side.
If that’s true, it seems unlikely that Lashkar-e-Taiba leader and 26/11 terror mastermind Hamid Saeed will be discussed at the talks, even though the Indian side has reason to be displeased by the Pakistani government’s defence of a man who has blood of innocent people in his hands.
Similarly, Pakistan might refrain from raising controversial issues, particularly Kashmir, the report suggested.
The first time that Manmohan Singh and Zardari met – in 2008 in New York, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting – Singh asked Zardari to extradite underworld leader Dawood Ibrahim, who enjoys sanctuary in Pakistan. Zardari responded by saying that since he had only recently replaced a military dictator (Musharraf) who had been in power for eight years, it would be difficult for him to deliver on big promises. He instead suggested that the two countries focus on small issues, including Siachen, that impeded relations between them.
Zardari came under pressure at the last minute at home to call off his “private visit” to India and instead visit Siachen, where over 100 Pakistani troops are feared killed in an avalanche.
Zardari also received a caution – from an unlikely source – that his visit to Ajmer dargah, the principal purpose of his visit, could prove inauspicious. Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray, who consistently opposes any effort by India to normalise relations with Pakistan, reminded Zardari that the last Pakistani leader to visit Ajmer was General Pervez Musharraf – who lost power and had to leave his country after his Ajmer visit.
Thackeray also said that whatever it was that Zardari was coming to Ajmer to pray for, his prayers would not be answered. “The place of worship is situated in India. How will the prayers of those who have an evil eye on India be answered, Thackeray wondered.
Given the atmospherics and the absence of a structured dialogue during this “private visit”, few expect anything concrete to come of today’s meeting. Even the precise details of any roadmap for peace that they will draw up for “next generation” leaders to follow up on may not be known for a while.
There’s only so much that even leaders who are desperate for a legacy may be able to deliver.

Bollywood filmmaker Subhash Ghai.
Filmmaker Subhash Ghai is terribly angry and hurt. Reacting to the Supreme Court upholding the Bombay High Court order quashing the 20 acre land allotted to his film school Whistling Woods International in Film city, Mumbai, he says, “I am very hurt. I feel that my dedication has been abused. My
students are depressed, hurt and angry because their career is at stake.”
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court had pulled up former Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh for giving 20 acres of land to Ghai in 2004 for his film institute. The court said: “One cannot be treated as a blue-eyed boy for whom rules can be bent or bypassed to give away land of the state.”
Ghai defends: “People are viewing this as some sort of a scam. If I had been a blue-eyed boy, I would have set up a multiplex or a mall. Why would I open a school? A blue-eyed boy should be worth Rs 2,000 crore, and not running into losses. Everyone had warned me saying it is a risky proposal ... nuksaan hoga, but I did it,” he says.
Ghai also trashes rumours that favours were exchanged between him and Deshmukh, including his 2006 film, Apna Sapna Money Money Money, starring Deshmukh’s son, Riteish Deshmukh.
“Unka beta hero bana tha 2000 mein. I cast him in 2006 ... I have been victimised in this political crossfire. All political leaders, policy makers and the government concerned should have told me to stop and relocate in 2000. Why did they have to wait 10 years for this?”
On his equation with Deshmukh, he says, “Maine ek paise ka bhi dhanda nahi kiya hai in logon ke saath. They are friends just as they’re friends of Yash Raj or Ashutosh Gowariker.” The filmmaker says he has learnt his lesson: “The incoming government undoes what the last government had done.”
As per the high court order, Ghai was required to pay the market rent at an annual rate of Rs 5.3 crore for the 20-acre land from 2000 — retrospectively. His total financial losses would thus be Rs 105 crore, inclusive of the Rs 45-crore loss that the institute has run into. The land was allotted to him after a joint venture between his film studio, Mukta Arts, and the Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation.

RSS praises Indira Gandhi for tough stand against terror
NEW DELHI: RSS has praised late Indira Gandhi as the only one who had stood her ground against terror while it took a dig at BJP's Jaswant Singh for accompanying Kashmiri terrorists to secure the release of a planeload of Indian hostages.
In its editorial on the current hostage crisis in Odisha, RSS mouthpiece Organiser has said neither the Centre nor the states have a "well-defined policy" on kidnapping and hostage-prisoner swap.
"While Indira Gandhi as Prime Minister in 1984 went ahead and hanged Maqbool Bhat when the Kashmiri terrorists held the 48-year-old Indian diplomat Ravindra Mhatre as hostage. He was killed by the terrorists. Since then there has hardly ever been any instance when the government stood its ground," the editorial in latest edition of Organiser said.
It has cited examples where the government of the day bowed before the terrorists in a hostage situation.
"At Kandahar in 1999, the Indian Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh accompanied top Kashmiri terrorists to secure the release of a planeload of Indians," the mouthpiece said.
The article also mentions the Rubaiya Sayeed case, where the daughter of the then Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, was kidnapped in 1989 by Kashmiri extremists and the government of India had yielded.
The RSS mouthpiece insists that Maoists have used kidnapping successfully as a means not just for securing the release of its cadres but also to gain breathing time for "recouping and regrouping".
The article maintains that a "well-thought out strategy" needs to be put in place to convey that India is not a weak state, failing which the whole anti-terror campaign would become a joke.

Leaders in search of a ‘peace legacy’

‘Bharat Ratna’ Lal Bahadur Shrivastava Shastri (2 October 1904 – 11 January 1966), he shares his birthday with the Mahatma on October 2. He was the second Prime Minister of the Republic of India and a significant figure in the Indian independence movement.
'Bharat Ratna' Lal Bahadur Shrivastava Shastri (2 October 1904 - 11 January 1966)
A staunch Gandhian he discontinued the use of his surmane as it indicated his caste. he was born in Mughalsarai and moving to Varanasi in persual of higher education. A 1915, speech of Gandhiji converted him into a lifelong Gandhian. He spend some 9 years in prison for participating in the freedom struggle. His values never ditched him. During one of his prison terms his daughter fell ill. He was released for 15 days from teh prison. She died and a stoic Shastri performed her funeral rites and returned to prison, before time. And when his son’s illness was not cured withing the stipulated parole time he returned to prison..
In prison he got acquinted with the works of western philosophers, revolutionaries and social reformers and translated the autobiography of Marie Curie to Hindi.
After independence, he was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary in Uttar Pradesh. Then He became Minister of Police and Transport. He was the first to appoint women conductors and ordered that Police use jets of water instead of lathis to disperse unruly crowds.
In 1951, he became the General Secretary of the All-India Congress Committee and played an important role in the landslide successes of the Congress Party in the General Elections of 1952, 1957 and 1962.
In 1951, Nehru nominated him to the Rajya Sabha. He served as the Minister of Railways and Transport in the Central Cabinet from 1951 to 1956. In 1956, he offered his resignation after a railway accident at Mahbubnagar and three months later, he resigned accepting moral and constitutional responsibility for a railway accident at Ariyalur in Tamil Nadu that resulted in 144 deaths. His unprecedented gesture was greatly appreciated by the citizens.
In 1957 he was appointed as the Minister for Transport and Communications, and then as the Minister of Commerce and Industry. In 1961, he became Minister for Home. Chacha Nehru died in office on 27 May 1964. Then Congress Party President K. Kamaraj was instrumental in making and installing Shastri as Prime Minister on 9 June. He pushed through the Green Revolution which led to India becoming a food-surplus nation, although he did not live to see it.
During the 22-day war with Pakistan, Lal Bahadur Shastri created the slogan of “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan” (”Hail the soldier, Hail the farmer”). He was instrumental in promoting the White Revolution.
The problem for Shastri’s administration was Pakistan. Laying claim to half of the Kutch peninsula, Pakistan sent incursion forces in August 1965, leading to the Indo-Pak war. The Indo-Pak war ended on 23 September 1965 with a United Nations-mandated ceasefire. After the declaration of ceasefire, Shastri and Pakistani President Muhammad Ayub Khan attended a summit in Tashkent (former USSR) organised by Kosygin. On 10 January 1966, Shastri and Khan signed the Tashkent Declaration. The next day Shastri died, supposedly of a heart attack at 1:32 AM, and now he rest at Vijay Ghat, Delhi
He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, and his memorial “Vijay Ghat” in Delhi will forever remind Indians and humanity how this unassuming man personified ‘where there is a will there is a way’. His life would be a lesson for generations to come.

Jai Jawan Jai Kisan was a slogan given to India by the Prime Minister of India Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1965. It means hail the soldier and hail the farmer. Soon after Shastri took over the prime ministership of India after Nehru's death, India was attacked by Pakistan. At the same time there was scarcity of foodgrains in country. Shastri gave the slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kisan to enthuase the soldiers to defend India and simultaneously cheering farmers to do their best to increase the production of foodgrains to reduce dependence on import .It became a very popular slogan .
After Pokaran tests in 1998 Atal Behari Vajpayee added Jai Vighyan (Hail knowledge) to the slogan to underline the importance of knowledge in India' progress.
During acceptance speech of Mr Sunil Bharti Mittal at Teenmurti Bhavan on 15th December 2009 after receiving 10th Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award from President of India, the Director of Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, Delhi Dr Kailash Chandra Mishra restated the slogan as

….can these forthcoming 7matches will create 28yr’s old hysteria and magic?????
Cricket is like religion in our country which unites our large population despite of all religion, cast, creed,or region. With time it has merged boundaries and emerged as a passion for sports fans, specially cricket admirers of South asia….and many other countries as World cup or IPL made it more effective and popular. Its popularity reaches to different countries which are participating here annually. Its a other side of coin that commercialization of cricket,i.e IPL had killed its purity.
In cricket bussiness was always there but glamour and fatafat shots do distracts the audience to have patience to watch classic test matches And techniques of 50-50.
I am writing with Indian teams perspective. In last 42 matches played yet in 2011 cricket world cup .Indian team has shown no outstanding performance in any matches as a team in totality except few of their players contributions are exceptional in every matches as a match saviour.I must praise Yuvraj singh,Zaheer khan,sachin..for his match saving performances. But its not a world class spectacular show.Infact other teams of group B or A have not done better.Fluctuations in score board are quite interesting, but in case of own country its heart sinking—losing 9wickets in 29 runs against south Africa, losing 7wickets in 50runs against westindies, tie between England which seems to be a comfortable win one time…but in last few overs it we thought opposite.Only after 48th over it picked up!!Good we got one point.
It shows that when Indian team is blessed with a batting line-up that is the envy of many but neither mere strength nor headstrong reputation will fetch results and this is something that would hit hard.Collapses are indeed part of the game but the dramatic manner in which these wickets fall.I hope they play full 50overs in further matches and be crisp in taking catches and stoping singles besides our known “jaddu’ of spinners, pacebowlers….and few experiments.
Sachin’s performance is unquestionable whether it resulted in teams win or not. Though we want the little master to be a part of the Indian Cricket team forever, unfortunately, age is something that would come in between. So maybe this being the last World Cup for Sachin, who has done a lot for cricket in our country, Indian team can surely win this title for him and dedicate the victory to him. Also Tendulkar himself wants to do it for his nation because he thinks that he has done almost every thing possible for the nation except for winning this biggie.I am repeating these lines from my last article.
Here I must praise 3times “man of the match” Yuvraj Singh by quoting ex-cricketer Mr Madanlal’s words–“Yuvraj has taken the responsibility with a flair. He is the most trusted match winner in the team now. There was lot of talk surrounding his attitude before the tournament but he has silenced his critics.Don’t put pressure and allow him to make the most of his excellent form.” As Yuvraj said: “It’s going to be the match of this World Cup… I don’t expect anything less.”…Form, of course, has everything to do with Yuvraj’s rise. With 284 runs (average of 94.66) and nine wickets, he’s been the star performer for Team India in this World Cup.Till around a fortnight ago, Yuvraj was No.3, behind Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Now, he’s up to No.2, displacing the captain!!Well I don’t believe in number’s game much but.….keep it up Yuvi.
“The game really changed once Zaheer gave us the breakthrough “Dhoni said “After that we could apply pressure from both ends, and eventually we got more wickets than we needed and we seized the game in the end.” Wishing Indian team for continuation of this spell for next 3 matches.Stay fit and play well.
Stay fit and play well.(23/3/11)
Congratulations for india’s win in Q/Finals.Now 2more steps…great to see whole team performing well as a unit.Kudos goes to the captain for it.I wish even individually he should perform better next time but one need to pat Yuvraj for his outstanding allround performance including.sachin, suresh raina, gautam gambhir, zaheer, ashwin….and others. In the begining of Worldcup I had wished Yuvraj,Gautam and Indian team to come back in form and stay fit and perform well…country needs world cup.
Though its a sports and one should take results with sportsmanspirit…this is what we all learn from Games

With one country domination over after Australia’s decline, Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara feels that 2011 Cricket World Cup in the sub-continent is going to be one of the most competitive and open one.
“Yes, World Cup next year going to be the most competitive in recent times for a number of reasons.
“Australia have been defeated all around the world. The domination of spin in the sub-continent is also not what it used to be earlier as a lot of teams play spin better now. And for the sub-continent teams, the format of the tournament make it very competitive,” said Sangakkara in a teleconference with journalists from Sri Lanka.
He stressed on the importance of cricketers’ support for the Think Wise initiative, a joint partnership between the ICC, UNAIDS, UNICEF and the Global Media AIDS Initiative that has been running since 2003, which aims to raise awareness around HIV prevention and eliminate discrimination against people living HIV and AIDS.
“It is very important because many people living with HIV live in cricket-playing countries. It is something that you cannot escape no matter where we play and the lack of awareness and low sense of risk are some of the factors that contribute to high risk taking, making particularly young people in the 15-24 year age group vulnerable to infection,” said the cricketer.

Dinner diplomacy at Mohali
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The much-anticipated summit meeting between the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan will take place over an early dinner on Wednesday, said government sources.
After watching the India-Pakistan Cricket World Cup semi-final match for a brief while in the evening, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will invite his visiting Pakistani counterpart, Yousuf Raza Gilani, for dinner, during which both sides are expected to touch on the future of bilateral ties and the steps required to give them an impetus after the Foreign Secretary-level meeting in Thimphu in February, added the sources.
In line with the position adopted by the foreign offices of both countries, the sources maintained that there was no intention of raising expectations, given the complicated relationship that has had many false starts. At the same time, both sides were avoiding comments that would invite a riposte. This, they pointed out, was in evidence on the first day of the Interior/Home Secretary talk

Sri Lanka have reached their second successive World Cup final, and though they were blown away by Adam Gilchrist’s whirlwind century in the previous one, in 2007, their vice-captain Mahela Jayawardene said they had done really well since that setback. “Gilly did play that brilliant knock and we never had the opportunity to get into the game. It was an unfortunate episode. We have put it behind us and moved on.
“We are really motivated to be consistent and, to be right here in the final, speaks volumes about our character.”

Put “ancient animosities” behind, says PM at dinner meet with Gilani

Mohali, March 31, 2011
Buoyed by his cricket diplomacy, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that India and Pakistan should put their “ancient animosities” behind them and work for a “permanent reconciliation” and “cooperative solutions” to their problems. Speaking at a dinner he hosted for his Pakistani counterpart Yusuf R
aza Gilani last night on the margins of India-Pakistan World Cup cricket semi final match here, Singh said the two neighbouring countries “should be working together to find cooperative solutions and need permanent reconciliation to live together in dignity and honour”.
“We should put our ancient animosities behind us to attend to the problems of our nations,” he said.
Singh later said that “the beautiful game of cricket” has been a “uniting factor” in bringing together the two prime ministers.
“Cricket”, the Prime Minister told a TV channel, “has been a uniting factor. It has brought our two PMs together and I daresay that’s a very good beginning”.

Rs 45 Crore Tax Waiver to ICC: Aam Aadmi Govt bats for Pawar & Co , Cabinet clears tax breaks for ICC-1/4/11
With Pawar batting, Cabinet clears tax breaks for ICC
The government on Thursday approved a request from the International Cricket Council seeking tax exemption for World Cup cricket matches in India, but the proposal encountered strong criticism in the Union Cabinet meeting with Sports Minister Ajay Maken and some others questioning the logic of granting tax benefits to a sporting event that commercially makes crores of rupees in revenue and never lacks in sponsoring companies.
Supported by senior colleagues like Kumari Selja and Ambika Soni, sources said the Sports Minister’s argument was funds that would have become available had the tax exemption not been given, could have been used to cross-subsidise other sporting events where sponsorship is hard to find. Buttressing his argument, he is said to have further pointed out that his ministry’s budget had been significantly reduced this time, which put pressure on funds available for sporting events other than cricket.
Sources said Maken also raised doubts over whether the projected surplus earning of $201 million (approximately Rs 900 crore) given by ICC was accurate.
In its proposal, the ICC said that 60 per cent of this income will be raised from matches in India. I&B Minister Ambika Soni told a press briefing after the Cabinet meeting that the financial implication because of the tax exemption would
be about Rs 45 crore, based on the estimates given by
the ICC.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Saturday left for Mumbai to watch the World Cup final, but not before praying at Tirumala temple here for his team’s success in the match against India. Accompanied by his wife, the visiting dignitary, who had a ‘darshan’ of Lord Venkateswara and offered spe
cial puja Friday evening, participated in the special rituals Saturday morning.
Rajapaksa, an ardent devotee of the deity, participated in ‘suprabhatam’, the first rituals of the day amidst chanting of the Vedic hymns. According to Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which manages the affairs of India’s richest temple, suprabhatam seva is performed to wake up the Lord from his celestial sleep.
The Sri Lankan president stayed overnight atop Tirumala Hills after offering prayers Friday evening.
Rajapaksa later left for Mumbai by the special aircraft from the Renigunta airport. He will watch the final at the Wankhede Stadium along with his Indian counterpart Pratibha Patil.
A large number of Indian fans too offered prayers and organised special ‘yagyams’ in the temple town. Holding the Indian flag and pictures of players, they also took out a huge rally.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, himself a cricket player during his college days, also visited Tirupati to offer prayers. However, officials said his visit was a routine one and had nothing to do with the match.
Reddy told reporters he was confident that India would win the World Cup after 29 years. He conveyed his best wishes to the team.

Self-belief was the key to Team India’s triumph-(this is what even i suggessted them in a blog and it applies on anyone…VT)
Self-belief was the key to Team India’s
triumph
Tonight I can write the happiest lines. We are the ODI world champions. On Saturday at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, we regained the World Cup after a gap of 28 years.
The triumph highlighted the power of the collective team effort. Who would have imagined Team India chasing down a target of 275 with 10 balls to spare, with almost negligible contributions from Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar?
As for skipper MS Dhoni, I can only say, cometh the hour, cometh the man. Let us accept this, once and for all: the man has the Midas touch. We can debate for ages whether he should have played Sreesanth or not. And I know that everybody would have castigated him for promoting himself above the in-form Yuvraj Singh. The point is, like any good leader, MSD takes a decision and then stick to it. If he manages to get the right result every time, who are we to question him. Like any true leader, Dhoni always leads from the front. He is forthright and honest. That’s what makes him special. Now he has won every prize in cricket. Surely, India is blessed to have a skipper like him.
What was special about our team? Self-belief, for one. During the entire tournament, Team India kept the faith. Many of us despaired after we lost the toss under controversial circumstances. Many of us felt that 275 was a hard, if not impossible, target. Not the Men in Blue. They achieved the goal with calm and poise. Every run was hard fought but they never seemed to panic.
Each of the players who had not scored heavily in the earlier games came to the party on Saturday. Dhoni played the most special innings of his career. It will be compared with the great Steve Waugh innings of the 1999 semi-final against South Africa. Gambhir would always rue the shot he played to get out for 97 but the nation would always remember his innings as among the most valuable in the history of Indian cricket. Even young Kohli fared well.
All our bowlers, barring Sreesanth, did a fantastic job till the 46th over. Then they lost the plot in the last four overs conceding 54 runs. The odds were perhaps 55-45 in favour of the Lankans at that stage. And 70-30 when the openers got out. But then Team India had other ideas.
There is much more to write and comment on. This was Yuvraj Singh’s championship. He proved that winners never quit and that quitters never win. May be in a couple of days, I will write a performance report of every player. Right now, let us just enjoy the moment. This is one of my happiest moments as an Indian. I know it is yours too.

(CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL.FEW DAYS BACK HE WAS ON TIME MAGAZINE’S LIST OF POWERFUL PEOPLE ALSO. I HOPE IT GO ON BUT…..ONE THING WHICH WAS UNSTOPABLE WAS “AUCTION”FORMAT OF CRICKET PLAYERS IN “IPL’….!!! CAN’T SAY IF ANY OTHER SPORTS OF ANY COUNTRY HAS THIS SYSTEM,BUT SOMEHOW AUCTION OF ANY HUMAN BEING DOESN’T SOUND ‘”HEALTHY OR PRAISEWORTHY WAY OF GETING SOLD OR SELL YOUR PRIORITIES FOR PEOPLE WHO HAS BOUGHT YOU”….IT IS SOMEWAY REFLECTS THE MINDSET OF OLD TRADITION OF “GULAM BIKKRII”….OR “BONDED LABOURERS”…..!!! WELL IF WE WORK FOR ANYONE AND GET SALARIES,INDIRECTLY YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CERTAIN LOYALTY ABOUT THAT INDIVIDUAL/COMPANY OR WHERE EVER/WHOMEVER ONE WORK….BUT GETTING SOLD/BOUGHT/AUCTIONED….IS BIT “RACIST” KIND OF “OPERATION OF WHOLE PROCESS WHICH NEED TO BE CHANGED”.I HOPE INSTEAD OF BECOMING ONLY “MONEY MAKING MACHINES”…PLAYERS AND ALL WHO ARE PART OF IT THINK TO GET THE FORMAT CHANGED IN MORE DIGNIFIED FORMAT…..TO NOT GET SOLD LIKE COMMODITIES/ANIMALS/BIRDS/PRODUCTS/IDEAS …ETC.
ITS POPULARITY DO MADE ME THINK ONE CAN HAVE IPL OF OTHER SPORTS ALSO WITHOUT GETTING “AUCTIONED”,WHICH REALLY “PAINS ME”…SPONSORED BY DIFFERENT SECTORS….TO PROMOTE FINANCIAL HEALTH OF THAT GAMES INCLUDING ITS QUALITIES AND DISCOVER DOMESTIC LEVEL TALENTS FOR NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL GAMES.RECENTLY I HAVE SEEN A REPORT THAT FOR IPL MATCH IN INDORE, FOOTBALL TEAM WHICH HAS NATIONAL LEVEL PLAYERS WERE CLEANING CHAIRS FOR MONEY TO HELP THEIR FOOTBALL TEAM FINANCIALLY.ITS QUITE A SAD SCENE.SAD FOR SPORTS OF OUR COUNTRY WHERE WE HAVE MULTI CRORES CWG SCAMS??/….NEED TO OVERCOME FROM SUCH PROBLEMS WITH THE HELP OF SPORTS AUTHORITY AND DIFFERENT SPORTS ASSOCIATIONS/FEDERATIONS/PRIVATE SPONSORS….ETC.
WELL,SPORTS IS AN “OFFBEAT’ PROFESSION OR HOBBY!!…GOOD FOR SOCIAL HEALTH,ENTERTAINMENT,PHYSICAL FITNESS,HEART,SOUL AND MIND AND SOMEHOW ADD ON IN COUNTRY’S PRIDE.GIVE JOB OPPORTUNITIES TO MANY AND IF IT NEEDS INVESTMENT,THEN IT GENERATE REVENUES AS WELL BUT DEFINITLY IT WON’T BECOME PRIMARY FOCUS,CONCERN,OR MATTER OF NATIONAL OBSESSION ALONE!!!…..OTHER POINTS ARE THERE TO GET EVERYONE’S ATTENTION MORE URGENTLY….LIKE OUR BASIC LIVILIHOOD AND ROUTINE LIFE…AND ITS DEMANDS….WHICH ARE ALSO A SOCIAL/NATIONAL PROBLEMS….AND ITS SOLUTIONS.

Highlighting the importance of sports for the physical and mental development of youth, chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah on Sunday said that sports provides ample opportunity to imbibe team spirit, discipline, coordination and zest for achieving their goals.
“Sports provide ample opportunity to young persons to imbibe the team spirit, discipline, coordination and zest for achieving the goal,” Omar said speaking at a function in Jammu.
He said athletics and non-traditional sports should also be promoted besides cricket, football and hockey.
Appreciating the Jammu and Kashmir police for encouraging sports activities in the state, the chief minister said, “It is praise worthy that despite the difficult nature of your service, you give due attention to the promotion of sports and participate in the national and international events.”

Press Trust Of India
