The socio-economic and caste census was launched in the capital on Wednesday with the enumeration of chief minister Sheila Dikshit. She replied to various queries of the divisional commissioner, who along with other senior officers and an enumerator, was present to complete the formalities.

Ms Dikshit provided complete information about herself and the entries were recorded on a tablet and later shown to her for verification.

The first socio-economic and caste census exercise in independent India will be conducted between January 15 and February 29 in Delhi, with 10,000 enumerators surveying every home and individual, including the homeless, asking questions related to their socio-economic status.

To speed up the gathering of data in a city with an estimated population of 1.70 crore, the enumerators have been given tablet computers so that details of those already covered under Census 2011 can be updated, and there is no duplication or repetition of data.

“The enumerators will have a tablet computer with a pre-loaded survey form and the data collected would be daily complied at 182 designated charge centres located in the government schools buildings in the city,” a senior Delhi government official said.

The socio-economic and caste census is being conducted in Delhi by the revenue department with technical and financial support of ministry of rural development and ministry of housing and poverty alleviation of the Government of India.

New Delhi, Jan. 18

The Delhi high court on Wednesday sought the city government’s response on a plea to allow three- and four-wheelers to ply on the lane demarcated for buses on the BRT corridor for smooth flow of traffic.

Issuing a notice to the transport department of Delhi government, a division bench of Acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw sought response by March 7 on a PIL of Nyay Bhoomi, an organisation representing auto drivers, through its president Lt.

According to the petition, for smooth traffic movement on the 5.7 km BRT corridor between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand flyover, the government should not restrain vehicles other than the buses to ply in bus lane. The petitioner said except non-motorised vehicles like bicycle and cycle rickshaws, three-wheelers and four-wheelers should be allowed to ply in bus lane.
