Commonwealth Games all set for a gala opening..
About 7,000 men, women and children will dish out a
show of India’s cultural heritage in a gala Commonwealth Games opening
ceremony with the icing on the cake being Maestro A R Rahman’s
performance at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sunday. With
...most of the tickets already sold out, the two—hour ceremony, scheduled
from 7 p m, will start with President Pratibha Patil and Britain’s
Prince Charles expected to declare the Games open in front of a packed
stadium of 65,000 capacity tomorrow.The 619—member
strong Indian contingent will be led by Olympic gold medalist Abhinav
Bindra who will carry the Indian flag during the ceremony.Even
as tennis sensation Sania Mirza will not be part of the Indian
march—past as the Hyederabadi ace has preferred to rest, badminton star
Saina Nehwal, Beijing Olympic Games bronze medalist boxer Vijender
Kumar and wrestler Sushil Kumar will be among the six who will carry
the baton during the formal part of the pageant. There
will be seven segments - including Rhythm of India, Swagatam, Tree of
Knowledge, Yoga, Great Indian Journey and Oscar winner composer A.R.
Rahman’s rendition of the CWG anthem ‘Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto’ - in the
nearly three-hour ceremony. The guest panel will
include International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge,
Commonwealth Games Federation chief Mike Fennel, New Zealand Governor
General Sir Anand Satyanand, Monaco’s Prince Albert II and Presidents
Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives and Marcus Stephen of Nauru.Hosts
India are aiming to break into the traditional rivalry of champions
Australia and England who have been fighting it out for top two slots
in the past. The Aussies, who have topped the gold
and total medal tallies at the past five Games and are expected to once
again be confirmed as the number one nation, have sent their largest
ever team to an off—shore multi—discipline sports event in a bid to
continue their reign in Delhi.Although the
country’s high—water mark of 221 medals (84 gold, 69 silver and 68
bronze) at the 2006 Melbourne Games is unlikely to be surpassed in
India, team officials expect another gold rush.Australia’s record gold medal haul came at the 1994 Victoria Games in Canada with 87.

owned moral responsibility for a train accident in south India and
resigned, in 1956. He did not have a house of his own, even when he was
the Home Minister and people used to tease him the "homeless Home
Minister".
... That was Lal Bahadur Shastri, who shares his
date of birth with Mahatma Gandhi and was a staunch follower of the
latter's path of truth and non-violence. In the first general elections
of the Indian Republic, the Congress was returned to power with a huge
majority.
Shastri, who was the general secretary of the
party at that time, had complete control over the selection of partry
candidates. But he did not contest the elections. The Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru,
however, did not wish to leave such an able and honest man outside the
government. He persuaded him to seek election to the Rajya Sabha. He
won the election and was appointed the Railway Minister.
At that time there were four classes in the
railways: first, second, inter and third. The first class compartments
offered extreme luxury while the travails of passengers in the third
class was beyond description. Shastri made relentless efforts to remove
the wide disparity between the first and third class compartments. The
first class, which offered royal comfort, was abolished. The old second
class was converted into first class and the inter class was turned
into second class. His idea was to have only two classes in course of
time.
He provided greater facilities to passengers
in third class compartments. It was during his time that fans were
provided in third class compartments. He resigned as Railway Minister
owning moral responsibility, when an accident occurred in Ariyalur in
Tamil Nadu in 1956 in which 144 persons were killed. In fact, he had
put in his papers when an accident had occurred in Mahboobnagar three
months earlier, killing 112. But Nehru had not accepted it. He refused
to continue in the post after the Ariyalur accident.
He became Home Minister after the death of
Govind Ballabh Pant in 1961. He had rented a small house in Allahabad.
Whenever he went to Allahabad, he used to stay in that house. After
some time, the house owner had let it out to another family. When
Shastri resigned as minister, he vacated the Government quarter and he
did not have a place to live in.
Born at Mughalsarai in Uttar Pradesh on
October 2, 1904, Lal Bahadur Shastri had spent his early childhood at
his maternal uncle, Raghunath Prasad's house. His father, Sharada
Prasad, died when Shastri was hardly one-and-a-half years old, leaving
his mother, Ramdulari Devi, to take care of their three children. After
the death of her husband, Ramdulari Devi shifted to her father's house
in Mirzapur. She played a vital role in shaping Shastri's life by
imbibing the right values in him.
After completing his primary education at
Mirzapur, Shastri went to Benaras for further studies. He joined the
Harish Chandra Vidyalaya, where he was deeply influenced by his
mathematics teacher, Nishkameswar Prasad Misra, who inspired his
students by telling them stories of great leaders like Guru Gobind
Singh, Rana Pratap and Chhatrapati Shivaji.
He graduated from the nationalist university,
Kashi Vidyapeeth, in 1925 and was given the title, `Shastri', meaning
one who is learned in the scriptures. The next year, he joined the
`Servants of the People Society' started by Lala Lajpat Rai and plunged
into the freedom movement. Shastri married Lalita Devi, the youngest
daughter of Ganesh Prasad, in 1928. He did not believe in the dowry
system and refused to take dowry. However, on the insistence of his
father-in-law he took five yards of khadi cloth as dowry.
Inspired by his political guru, Bapu
Purushottamdas Tandon, Shastri joined the Congress Party. He became the
City Congress secretary and the president of the Allahabad Congress
Committee in 1930. He participated in all national movements between
1921 and 1942 and went to jail seven times. He was elected to the UP
Legislative Assembly in 1937.
Once when Shastri was in jail, he received the
news that his daughter fell ill. He requested the jailor to release him
on parole to attend to his daughter. The jailor granted him 15 days
parole.
On reaching home, he learnt that his daughter
had died. He performed the last rites of his daughter and told his
family members that he was going back to the jail. When they reminded
him that he was granted 15 days parole, he said, "That was to attend to
my sick daughter. But when she is no more, there is no reason for me to
take leave."
He became the Prime Minister after the death
of Jawaharlal Nehru. He tackled several problems like food shortage,
unemployment and poverty. To overcome the acute food shortage, he
initially imported food grains and distributed them throughout the
country. Later, he drew long-term plans to make the country
self-sufficient in food production.
He showed his mettle during the Indo-Pak war,
which broke out in 1965. He made it clear to Pakistan and the world
that India would not take it lying down, if Pakistan continued to
encourage cross-border terrorism. He gave full freedom to the Armed
Forces to retaliate and the military bases in Lahore and Sialkot were
attacked.
The war had established the supremacy of India
and brought Ayub Khan on to his feet. The United Nations passed a
resolution demanding a ceasefire. The Russian Prime Minister, Kosygin,
offered to mediate and Shastri and Ayub Khan started negotiations at
Tashkent. A `no-war' agreement was signed between the two countries on
January 10, 1966, and peace was restored. Shastri suffered a fatal
heart attack the same night.
He was awarded the highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, posthumously in 1966.

changing ideals have diminished the great Indian's effect on our daily
lives. But he remains and perhaps will forever remain a symbol that
defines this land. Modest to a fault, Gandhiji would not have liked
being idolised as a god or his every word being ...slavishly obeyed by a
nation of sycophants without any understanding or logic. He
simply suggested a few ideas and if you also thought they were good
ideas, he only asked that you join him, in however simple a manner, in
trying to make those ideas a reality. Somehow he manages to ask us all
to join him even to this day. Mahatma remains the conscience of
the nation. We can only hope that, like all consciences, his voice
might get muffled most of the times but obeyed when it really matters. Here are a few glimpses of his presence in our lives.

VADODARA: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi may be advocating active role of youngsters and Youth Congress (YC)
in the party, but the city Congress unit does not seem to agree with
him. The city unit of YC has been completely sidelined and none of its
active members... has been given tickets for contesting the upcoming civic
polls. Despite, several presentations to the Congress leaders, YC's
role has been marginalised to just campaigning this year. The
city Congress has granted tickets to only two YC members and they too
are not much active in the organisation. Sources in Congress said that
over a dozen YC workers were planning to seek poll tickets this time as
they were hopeful that the party would prefer young and active
candidates. "However, most of them got demotivated owing to internal
politics in the party. The YC workers got a whiff of how chances of
many young leaders were scuttled by senior leaders ahead of the polls.
Hence most of the YC members didn't come forward to seek tickets," said
an YC member. "If they can deny poll ticket to a seasoned
leader like Narendra Rawat then what are our chances? We had demanded
tickets for four YC candidates this time but all of them were rejected.
It is disappointing for us," another YC office-bearer said.
YC had suggested name of Vipul Barot, general secretary of Sayajigunj
assembly for ward number 10, but the ticket went to Nandkishor Pardesi.
Similarly, name of Bashir Patel, general secretary of Lok Sabha
(minority) from YC was sent for ward number 13. However, Gulam Wadwala, who had lost three civic polls as independent candidate earlier, was granted ticket by Congress.
"YC member and association president of Akota ward, Imran Pathan's name
too wasn't considered for ward number 15. YC general secretary Hasmukh
Parmar too couldn't bag the ticket as Raju Makwana was picked up as
Congress candidate for ward number 20. All the YC candidates whose
names were suggested were graduates," sources in YC said. "Instead, Dharu Bharwad, YC assembly delegate
got ticket from ward 5 and Lalita Shah, YC general secretary (Lok
Sabha) was given ticket from ward 9. Both of them are not active in YC
and they have bagged tickets owing to their connections with senior
Congress leaders," YC office-bearers added.

Council for Human Resources in Health will be introduced in Parliament
soon to address issues of quality, quantity and equitable distribution
of medical education resources. Addressing students at
the 38th convocation ceremony of the All India Institute of... Medical
Sciences, he said the government has tried to address the critical
lacunae of inadequate public provisioning for critical health services. “The
11th five year plan envisaged an increase in public expenditure on
health to at least two per cent of the GDP. This percentage was below
one per cent at the start of the 11th plan and has increased to only
1.1 per cent in 2009 according to the mid—term appraisal.“There
is clearly much more to do and a large effort will be required in the
twelfth plan period to achieve the goal of taking the total allocation
for the health sector to 2—3 per cent of GDP. Since most of the
expenditure on health is in the state budget, the state governments
will also have to substantially increase their expenditures,” he said. Observing
that in India as well as globally, there is a growing sense that
medical education needs a revamp to adapt it to contemporary needs and
realities, Mr. Singh said the need of the hour is to produce
professionals who address health not only from the perspective of the
individual patients but as part of a team integrated into the larger
health system. “India needs many more health
professionals, of different categories to fill the huge shortfall,” the
Prime Minister said, adding the Government is reviewing the existing
regulatory system for medical education. “After extensive
consultations, the ministry of health has prepared a draft bill for
setting up a National Council for Human Resources in Health that will
be introduced soon in Parliament. The bill will seek to create an
enabling environment that will address issues of quality, quantity and
equitable distribution of medical education resources,” he said. Highlighting
the health policy of his government, he said in recent years, the
government has adopted a more inclusive and holistic approach towards
providing health security in the country, emphasising therein the
importance of improved sanitation, nutrition and clean drinking water. Mr.
Singh said the Valiathan Committee formed to look into the
modernisation of AIIMS has submitted its recommendations and a
high—powered committee was looking into it. “A high—powered group is
looking into the statutes,” he added. Union Health
Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said government has roped in experts from the
IIM, Ahmadabad, to streamline management procedures in AIIMS.

Does sport continue to be an instrument of peace and
harmony? If visionaries like Baron Pierre Coubertin, the author of the
Modern Olympic Games, and Rev. Ashley Cooper, who sowed the seeds for a
sports festival for the English speaking people, which we call the
...Commonwealth Games, were to witness what has corrupted their concept,
their anguish would be immeasurable.A siege!Enveloped
by a security blanket, the national Capital mirrors the elements of a
siege. A visitor entering this metropolis will be startled by the
indifference and apathy, a total lack of gaiety even with only two days
remaining for the Opening Ceremony. Flags, banners
and pennants that actually accentuate the people's involvement in a
sporting extravaganza are conspicuous by their absence. Even the few
are confined to a few areas. The myriad loose ends
are appalling in every segment of the run-up to the Games. And they
continue to be so, with more and more glitches surfacing by the hour. Sport
is perceived as a vehicle of pleasure towards conquering new frontiers
of excellence, but today its predominating sentiment is fear,
compounded by the lack of compunction in giving in to the temptations
of wealth and dope. It is the fear complex that
has forced quite a few stars to skip the Games, notwithstanding the
reiterations by the powers-that-be that every inch of the city is under
surveillance. Added to this is the lack of a
financial benefit, apart from the joy of climbing the podium. The
threat to modern mega sporting events collapsing in a financial mess
stems from the growing gigantism, which Coubertin and Cooper wanted the
host to avoid. CommercialisationBut
commercialisation of sport has contributed enormously to this line of
thinking. With 17 disciplines, CWG-2010, the 19th edition, becomes the
costliest in the annals of the Commonwealth Games. Probably,
no other sporting event, including the Olympics, was disgraced by
polemics as this venture is. Nothing seems to have moved in the right
direction, but by the time the disintegration began to hit the face,
efforts were redoubled involving multiple agencies, which proved to be
insufficient to eradicate all the perversities that had manifested
themselves thanks to the relentless focus by the media. The
mood here now seems to be one of despair, to run the event somehow,
regardless of the criticisms and controversies waiting to erupt both at
home and abroad. The image anyway has been tarnished, and the cosmetics
applied in the eleventh hour are unlikely to obliterate the odium
associated with Commonwealth Games 2010.
