CHENNAI: It will now pay to display good behaviour and have the right attitude towards life. The Central Board of Secondary Education has said Class IX students can score higher marks in maths or science by showing they have a healthy attitude or adequate life skills.
In a recent circular, CBSE has asked schools to award higher grades in subjects under the scholastic category, which includes English, mathematics, science or social science, to students who get exceptionally good scores in co-scholastic areas where they are tested attitude towards the teacher, discipline, or leadership qualities.
While considering co-scholastic areas for promotion of a student from one class to the next, CBSE has said that after converting grades into grade points, a student who scores in the highest range may be upgraded to the next higher level in two scholastic subjects, and those in the second highest range may be upgraded to the next higher grade in one scholastic subject.
"All school heads are advised to explain this promotion policy for Class IX in detail to parents, teachers and students to create awareness and avoid unnecessary inconvenience at a later stage," the CBSE circular said. School heads consider this directive as a reminder to schools that have failed to take assessment in co-scholastic areas.
"Some schools still consider only academic skills for promotion. This circular is expected to be a wake-up call for such schools to take note of the importance that the CBSE places on developing life skills, and attitudes and values of children," said senior principal of Chennai's RMK Group of Schools, C Satish.
For instance, a child is good at debating, which reveals leadership qualities, then scores obtained in this activity could be added to the student's English scores. "Some schools have been following this. The CBSE directive is a call for others to keep up with these proactive schools," said Satish.

DHAKA: Team India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni may find it difficult to recollect when he had last taken a rickshaw ride, but he is scheduled to take one on Thursday when captains of all the 14 participating countries are taken around the new-look Bangabandhu Stadium on tri-cycles during a glitzy opening ceremony of the 2011 World Cup.
In a nation where rickshaws continue to be the most popular mode of conveyance, it is Bangladesh's way of fusing tradition with modernity. The Pontings and Sangakkaras may find Thursday's rickshaw ride amusing but, for the 14 rickshawalas handpicked to ferry the cricketing luminaries --- it could well be a life-changing experience. As television cameras capture the moment and telecast the images to a worldwide audience, they will not only get their two minutes of fame but also become part of World Cup history, leaving the rest of their ilk to envy these chosen 14.
The much-hyped rickshaw ride is not the only thing that will be on view during the two-hour-long opening ceremony whose tickets have long been sold out. A few thousand fans who braved long queues and to buy tickets can consider themselves lucky because it offers them two shows for the price of one. The gates of the stadium will open at 2.30pm (3pm IST) and fans will be treated to a pre-show (from 4 to 6pm) before the big show gets under way with the welcome song --- O prithibi, tumi aaj chine nao (O world, it's time to know us) --- sung by local artistes.
The high point of the function is expected in the segment where Canadian rock singer Bryan Adams takes over from top singers from the three host nations --- Bangladesh, Indian and Sri Lanka --- following the formal opening of the tournament by prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who has spared no effort in branding the country's image with the ICC's quadrennial showpiece event.
Three of Bangladesh's top lady singers --- Runa Laila, Sabina Yasmin and Mumtaz will kick off this segment by belting out some of their chart-bursting numbers, while the mellifluous voice of Sonu Nigam will tug at our heart strings even as the 14 skippers enjoy a rickshaw ride. And there will the trio of Shankar, Ehsan and Loy to sing the theme song De Ghuma Ke (whack it will all your might) in Hindi, Bengali and English to set the tone of the competition which involves a staggering 49 matches spread over six weeks. There will also be a band from Sri Lanka to entertain the fans before Adams gives it to us straight from the heart in what promises to be a one night love affair.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), which was keen to rope in Shakira for the opening ceremony, opted for Adams after the representatives of the Colombian singer reportedly asked for a cool $2 million appearance fee!
An aerial cricket show, touted to be first of its kind, promises to wow the spectators. The last time the World Cup was staged in the sub-continent in 1996, the opening ceremony at the Eden Gardens had been an unmitigated disaster. First-time co-hosts, Bangladesh, are taking every precaution to prevent any glitches. नफरत की बुनियाद पर कायम एक पूरी व्यवस्था प्यार के धक्कों के आगे चरमरा रही है। ये बदलते उत्पादन संबंधों, आधुनिकता और शहरीकरण का मिलाजुला असर है....

भारतीय समाज के लिए ये जश्न मनाने और ढोल-नगाड़ा बजाने की घड़ी है। रिपोर्ट आई है कि देश में ऐसी अंतर्जातीय शादियों की संख्या लगातार बढ़ रही है, जिनमें दूल्हे या दूल्हन में से कोई एक दलित है। कुछ बात तो ये रिपोर्ट बता गई और कुछ बातें हम और आप अपने शहरों-महानगरों में देख रहे हैं। महानगरों में अंतर्जातीय शादियां अब लोगों को चौंकाती नहीं है। ये सही है कि ऐसा महानगरों और देश के विकसित अंचलों में ज्यादा हो रहा है, लेकिन शुभ शुरुआत कहीं से भी हो, शुभ तो है ही। विवाह संस्था ही दरअसल वो तोता है जिसमें जाति व्यवस्था की जान बसती है। विवाह संस्था के पुरातन स्वरूप में आ रही निर्णायक दिखती दरारों के अंदर अब बदलते समय की रोशनी झांकने लगी है। अलग अलग जातियों के बीच हो रही शादियां वर्णों की रक्त-शुद्धता की अवधारणा पर ऐसा वार है, जिसके आगे जाति व्यवस्था का टिक पाना संभव नहीं है। जाति व्यवस्था के लिए ये मुश्किल की घड़ी है। ये ऐसा समय है जब नफरत की एक पूरी स्थापित व्यवस्था प्यार के धक्कों के आगे चरमरा रही है।
दरअसल ये कभी न कभी होना ही था। इसमें देर सिर्फ इसलिए लगी कि भारत में औद्योगीकरण और शहरीकरण की रफ्तार कमजोर है। मुंबई और कोलकाता में जब कारखाने खुले तो कैंटीनों में साथ खाने का चलन शुरू हुआ और इस तरह रोटी ने जाति की सीमा लांघ ली। बसों में और ट्रेन-ट्राम आदि सार्वजनिक परिवहन के साधनों में साथ सफर करने, साथ बैठकर सिनेमा-थिएटर देखने, मेले-ठेलों-मॉल-बाजार में साथ घूमने आदि से छुआछूत के बंधन कमजोर पड़े। शहरों में रहने वाले ये हठ नहीं पाल सकते थे कि कोई छू गया तो नहाना होगा ना ही किसी के लिए ये संभव था कि पूरा हॉल बुक कराकर फिल्म देखे। तो इस तरह जो चीज हजारों साल में नहीं बदली वो दशकों में बदल गई।
इसके अलावा औद्योगीकरण ने कर्म और जाति के बंधनों को कमजोर कर दिया। भारत में जाति व्यवस्था सिर्फ ऊंच-नीच की यानी समाज में हायरार्की तय करने की व्यवस्था नहीं है। बल्कि जाति उत्पादन संबंधों और कर्मों को निर्धारित करने वाली व्यवस्था भी है। जाति व्यवस्था के तहत हर व्यक्ति की जन्म के साथ सिर्फ जाति तय नहीं होती,बल्कि उसका कर्म भी तय हो जाता है। भारत में हर जाति के साथ एक कर्म जुड़ा है। ऐसा लगभग दो हजार साल तक चला। तमाम सुधार आंदोलनों, भक्ति आंदोलनों और मुस्लिम और ईसाई शासन के झंझावातों को जाति की संस्था झेल गई। लेकिन ग्राम समाज से शहरी समाज में हो रहे संक्रमण और आधुनिकता ने वो कर दिखाया, जिसे बड़े-बड़े समाज सुधारक नहीं कर पाए थे।
आज शहरों में कोई ये नहीं कहेगा कि किसी जाति को कोई खास काम करना होगा। यहां तक कि शौचालय साफ करने के काम में भी सवर्ण जातियों के काफी लोग लगे हैं। सुलभ आंदोलन की बात करें,या सरकारी स्तर पर स्वीपर्स की नियुक्ति की या फिर फास्ट फूड ज्वायंट और मॉल्स की, सफाई के काम में अब गैर दलित भी हैं। देश में अब सबसे ज्यादा धन का सृजन सेवा क्षेत्र में हो रहा है और इस क्षेत्र में आने के लिए ब्राह्मणों से लेकर दलितों तक में बराबर की होड़ लगी है। सेवा शूद्रों का काम है, बोलने वाले अब हास्य के पात्र हैं।रिटेलिंग, बैंकिग, इंश्योरेंस से लेकर हेल्थकेयर और हॉस्पिटालिटी जैसे समाम सेक्टर में हर जाति समूह के लोग काम करते हैं।
जाति व्यवस्था मे एक के बाद एक दरारें लगातार आती गईं और अब इस पर निर्णायक प्रहार वहां हो रहा है, जिसकी शुद्धता के बिना जाति बच ही नहीं सकती। ये प्रहार विवाह संस्था के वर्णवादी स्वरूप पर हो रहा है। शहरों ने युवक-युवतियों के बीच संबंधों को नया स्तर प्रदान किया है। खासकर महिलाओं की आर्थिक आजादी ने उन्हें संबंधों के मामले में भी ज्यादा आजाद होने का अवसर दिया है। अलग अलग जाति के युवक युवतियों के लिए मिलने जुलने के अवसर भी अब पहले से काफी ज्यादा हैं। शिक्षा संस्थाओं से लेकर दफ्तरों और काम करने की तमाम जगहों से लेकर क्लब-पार्क और इंटरनेट तक अब प्रेम की नई-नई संभावनाएं प्रदान कर रहे हैं। जाति व्यवस्था को सख्ती से लागू करने वाली व्यवस्था भी शहरों में ढीली है।
अगर आप शहरों या महानगरों में रहते हैं तो शादी के ऐसे कार्ड आपके पास अक्सर पहुंच रहे होंगे,जिसमें शादी तय करने में परिवार या कुनबे की भूमिका नहीं होगी। इसका मतलब ये कतई नहीं है कि आधुनिकता अनिवार्य रूप से जाति का ध्वंस कर रही है। इंटरनेट युग ने जहां मिलने जुलने और रिश्ते बनाने के अबाध मौके उपलब्ध कराए हैं वहीं शादी की साइट्स ने जातिवादी होने की हर सुविधा प्रदान की है। अमूमन हर मेट्रिमोनियल साइट आपको जाति के अनुसार वर और वधु छांटने की सुविधा देती है। यहां तक की वर्चुअल स्पेस में भी आप आप अपनी जाति और गोत्र तक के ग्रुप बना सकते हैं। ऑर्कूट से लेकर फेसबुक तक में जातियों के ग्रुप बन गए हैं जहां एक ही जाति के लोग वर्चुअल स्पेस में मिलते बतियाते हैं।
ये जाति की जीवनी शक्ति और वक्त के मुताबिक उसकी अनुकूलन क्षमता का एक और प्रमाण है। दरअसल शादी के मामले में जाति के ऊपर प्यार की निर्णायक जीत अभी नहीं हुई है। जाति संस्था लगभग दो हजार से अगर जिंदा है और फलफूल रही है तो इसकी यही वजह है कि उसमें इतना लोच है कि वो समय के मुताबिक खुद को ढाल ले। इस बार स्थिति इस मायने में अलग है कि जाति पर इस बार का हमला किसी सुधारक की इच्छा या उपदेश की वजह से नहीं हो रहा है। इस बार जो चीज बदल रही है वो है सामंती उत्पादन संबंध।
जाति व्यवस्था की प्राणवायु सामंती उत्पादन संबंध ही है। अगर उत्पादन के रिश्ते बदल जाएंगे तो जाति नहीं बचेगी। भारत इस समय तेजी से बदल रहा है। सर्विस और मैन्युफैक्चरिंग सेक्टर ने खेती को पीछे छोड़ दिया है। देश की जीडीपी यानी सकल घरेलू उत्पाद में खेती का हिस्सा घटकर 18 फीसदी से भी कम रह गया है। इस बदलाव का असर समाज पर भी हो रहा है। आपके पास आने वाले शादी के कार्डों में दिख रहे नाम अगर बदल रहे हैं तो इसका रिश्ता बदलते उत्पादन संबंधों से भी हैं। हर जाति के लोग, अगर अपने लिए तय काम नहीं करेंगे, और जाति के बाहर शादियां होने लगेंगी तो फिर जाति व्यवस्था में बचेगा ही क्या?

Jai Singh मुलाधार (उत्पादन संबंध) के साथ अधिरचना (जाति व्यवस्था जिसका एक हिस्सा है) का बदलना निश्चित है। प्रधान कारक मूलाधार का बदलना है। इसलिए सिर्फ अधिरचना में थोड़े बहुत हेर फेर करने से (जैसे कि आरक्षण के प्रावधान से) हजारों साल पुरानी इस व्यवस्था में आमूल-चूल बदलाव नहीं आएगा। इसलिए जरूरी यह है कि मूलाधार पर चोट की जाए। उत्पादन संबंधों को उत्पादक शक्तियों के विकास के अनुरूप बनाया जाए, और निश्चित ही यह काम भी रैडिकल और क्रान्तिकारी ढंग से होना चाहिए, क्रमिक या सुधारवादी ढंग से नहीं।

नफरत की बुनियाद पर कायम एक पूरी व्यवस्था प्यार के धक्कों के आगे चरमरा रही है। ये बदलते उत्पादन संबंधों, आधुनिकता और शहरीकरण का मिलाजुला असर है....

भारतीय समाज के लिए ये जश्न मनाने और ढोल-नगाड़ा बजाने की घड़ी है। रिपोर्ट आई है कि देश में ऐसी अंतर्जातीय शादियों की संख्या लगातार बढ़ रही है, जिनमें दूल्हे या दूल्हन में से कोई एक दलित है। कुछ बात तो ये रिपोर्ट बता गई और कुछ बातें हम और आप अपने शहरों-महानगरों में देख रहे हैं। महानगरों में अंतर्जातीय शादियां अब लोगों को चौंकाती नहीं है। ये सही है कि ऐसा महानगरों और देश के विकसित अंचलों में ज्यादा हो रहा है, लेकिन शुभ शुरुआत कहीं से भी हो, शुभ तो है ही। विवाह संस्था ही दरअसल वो तोता है जिसमें जाति व्यवस्था की जान बसती है। विवाह संस्था के पुरातन स्वरूप में आ रही निर्णायक दिखती दरारों के अंदर अब बदलते समय की रोशनी झांकने लगी है। अलग अलग जातियों के बीच हो रही शादियां वर्णों की रक्त-शुद्धता की अवधारणा पर ऐसा वार है, जिसके आगे जाति व्यवस्था का टिक पाना संभव नहीं है। जाति व्यवस्था के लिए ये मुश्किल की घड़ी है। ये ऐसा समय है जब नफरत की एक पूरी स्थापित व्यवस्था प्यार के धक्कों के आगे चरमरा रही है।
दरअसल ये कभी न कभी होना ही था। इसमें देर सिर्फ इसलिए लगी कि भारत में औद्योगीकरण और शहरीकरण की रफ्तार कमजोर है। मुंबई और कोलकाता में जब कारखाने खुले तो कैंटीनों में साथ खाने का चलन शुरू हुआ और इस तरह रोटी ने जाति की सीमा लांघ ली। बसों में और ट्रेन-ट्राम आदि सार्वजनिक परिवहन के साधनों में साथ सफर करने, साथ बैठकर सिनेमा-थिएटर देखने, मेले-ठेलों-मॉल-बाजार में साथ घूमने आदि से छुआछूत के बंधन कमजोर पड़े। शहरों में रहने वाले ये हठ नहीं पाल सकते थे कि कोई छू गया तो नहाना होगा ना ही किसी के लिए ये संभव था कि पूरा हॉल बुक कराकर फिल्म देखे। तो इस तरह जो चीज हजारों साल में नहीं बदली वो दशकों में बदल गई।
इसके अलावा औद्योगीकरण ने कर्म और जाति के बंधनों को कमजोर कर दिया। भारत में जाति व्यवस्था सिर्फ ऊंच-नीच की यानी समाज में हायरार्की तय करने की व्यवस्था नहीं है। बल्कि जाति उत्पादन संबंधों और कर्मों को निर्धारित करने वाली व्यवस्था भी है। जाति व्यवस्था के तहत हर व्यक्ति की जन्म के साथ सिर्फ जाति तय नहीं होती,बल्कि उसका कर्म भी तय हो जाता है। भारत में हर जाति के साथ एक कर्म जुड़ा है। ऐसा लगभग दो हजार साल तक चला। तमाम सुधार आंदोलनों, भक्ति आंदोलनों और मुस्लिम और ईसाई शासन के झंझावातों को जाति की संस्था झेल गई। लेकिन ग्राम समाज से शहरी समाज में हो रहे संक्रमण और आधुनिकता ने वो कर दिखाया, जिसे बड़े-बड़े समाज सुधारक नहीं कर पाए थे।
आज शहरों में कोई ये नहीं कहेगा कि किसी जाति को कोई खास काम करना होगा। यहां तक कि शौचालय साफ करने के काम में भी सवर्ण जातियों के काफी लोग लगे हैं। सुलभ आंदोलन की बात करें,या सरकारी स्तर पर स्वीपर्स की नियुक्ति की या फिर फास्ट फूड ज्वायंट और मॉल्स की, सफाई के काम में अब गैर दलित भी हैं। देश में अब सबसे ज्यादा धन का सृजन सेवा क्षेत्र में हो रहा है और इस क्षेत्र में आने के लिए ब्राह्मणों से लेकर दलितों तक में बराबर की होड़ लगी है। सेवा शूद्रों का काम है, बोलने वाले अब हास्य के पात्र हैं।रिटेलिंग, बैंकिग, इंश्योरेंस से लेकर हेल्थकेयर और हॉस्पिटालिटी जैसे समाम सेक्टर में हर जाति समूह के लोग काम करते हैं।
जाति व्यवस्था मे एक के बाद एक दरारें लगातार आती गईं और अब इस पर निर्णायक प्रहार वहां हो रहा है, जिसकी शुद्धता के बिना जाति बच ही नहीं सकती। ये प्रहार विवाह संस्था के वर्णवादी स्वरूप पर हो रहा है। शहरों ने युवक-युवतियों के बीच संबंधों को नया स्तर प्रदान किया है। खासकर महिलाओं की आर्थिक आजादी ने उन्हें संबंधों के मामले में भी ज्यादा आजाद होने का अवसर दिया है। अलग अलग जाति के युवक युवतियों के लिए मिलने जुलने के अवसर भी अब पहले से काफी ज्यादा हैं। शिक्षा संस्थाओं से लेकर दफ्तरों और काम करने की तमाम जगहों से लेकर क्लब-पार्क और इंटरनेट तक अब प्रेम की नई-नई संभावनाएं प्रदान कर रहे हैं। जाति व्यवस्था को सख्ती से लागू करने वाली व्यवस्था भी शहरों में ढीली है।
अगर आप शहरों या महानगरों में रहते हैं तो शादी के ऐसे कार्ड आपके पास अक्सर पहुंच रहे होंगे,जिसमें शादी तय करने में परिवार या कुनबे की भूमिका नहीं होगी। इसका मतलब ये कतई नहीं है कि आधुनिकता अनिवार्य रूप से जाति का ध्वंस कर रही है। इंटरनेट युग ने जहां मिलने जुलने और रिश्ते बनाने के अबाध मौके उपलब्ध कराए हैं वहीं शादी की साइट्स ने जातिवादी होने की हर सुविधा प्रदान की है। अमूमन हर मेट्रिमोनियल साइट आपको जाति के अनुसार वर और वधु छांटने की सुविधा देती है। यहां तक की वर्चुअल स्पेस में भी आप आप अपनी जाति और गोत्र तक के ग्रुप बना सकते हैं। ऑर्कूट से लेकर फेसबुक तक में जातियों के ग्रुप बन गए हैं जहां एक ही जाति के लोग वर्चुअल स्पेस में मिलते बतियाते हैं।
ये जाति की जीवनी शक्ति और वक्त के मुताबिक उसकी अनुकूलन क्षमता का एक और प्रमाण है। दरअसल शादी के मामले में जाति के ऊपर प्यार की निर्णायक जीत अभी नहीं हुई है। जाति संस्था लगभग दो हजार से अगर जिंदा है और फलफूल रही है तो इसकी यही वजह है कि उसमें इतना लोच है कि वो समय के मुताबिक खुद को ढाल ले। इस बार स्थिति इस मायने में अलग है कि जाति पर इस बार का हमला किसी सुधारक की इच्छा या उपदेश की वजह से नहीं हो रहा है। इस बार जो चीज बदल रही है वो है सामंती उत्पादन संबंध।
जाति व्यवस्था की प्राणवायु सामंती उत्पादन संबंध ही है। अगर उत्पादन के रिश्ते बदल जाएंगे तो जाति नहीं बचेगी। भारत इस समय तेजी से बदल रहा है। सर्विस और मैन्युफैक्चरिंग सेक्टर ने खेती को पीछे छोड़ दिया है। देश की जीडीपी यानी सकल घरेलू उत्पाद में खेती का हिस्सा घटकर 18 फीसदी से भी कम रह गया है। इस बदलाव का असर समाज पर भी हो रहा है। आपके पास आने वाले शादी के कार्डों में दिख रहे नाम अगर बदल रहे हैं तो इसका रिश्ता बदलते उत्पादन संबंधों से भी हैं। हर जाति के लोग, अगर अपने लिए तय काम नहीं करेंगे, और जाति के बाहर शादियां होने लगेंगी तो फिर जाति व्यवस्था में बचेगा ही क्या?
क्या आप इस बदलते समय की आहट सुन पा रहे हैं?
(पिछले साल का लेख है। बदलते समय के साथ सोच भी बदली है। लेकिन एक खास समय की विचार प्रक्रिया का हिस्सा है, इसलिए इसमें ज्यादा बदलाव नहीं किया है। )

Jai Singh मुलाधार (उत्पादन संबंध) के साथ अधिरचना (जाति व्यवस्था जिसका एक हिस्सा है) का बदलना निश्चित है। प्रधान कारक मूलाधार का बदलना है। इसलिए सिर्फ अधिरचना में थोड़े बहुत हेर फेर करने से (जैसे कि आरक्षण के प्रावधान से) हजारों साल पुरानी इस व्यवस्था में आमूल-चूल बदलाव नहीं आएगा। इसलिए जरूरी यह है कि मूलाधार पर चोट की जाए। उत्पादन संबंधों को उत्पादक शक्तियों के विकास के अनुरूप बनाया जाए, और निश्चित ही यह काम भी रैडिकल और क्रान्तिकारी ढंग से होना चाहिए, क्रमिक या सुधारवादी ढंग से नहीं।

While reviewing the country’s nutrition index, polices, and strategies, the Prime Minister emphasized the role of integrated farming that promotes growing food grains, mulch cattle, and horticulture to meet nutritional needs of poor people.
In a conference on ‘Leveraging agriculture for improving nutrition and health’ in New Delhi, the Prime Minister said, “Nutrition and health are issues are particularly topical today as the world faces rising food prices in many countries and there is growing recognition that climate change may endanger food security in many developing countries.
"Leveraging agriculture for improving nutrition and health, which is the central theme of this conference, is particularly important in developing countries where agriculture is also the mainstay of a very large number of people.”
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) organized the conference as part of International Policy Consultation.
Malnutrition: stark and severe
As Amartya Sen’s work shows, India has more malnourished people, especially children, than sub-Saharan Africa has. Nearly one billion go hungry globally. One in four children under the age of five is underweight.
In spite of government's efforts, malnutrition, and its deadly effects, stalks various lands. The hidden hunger, which is defined as deficiency of essential vitamins, minerals like iron, is severe in parts of India and the world.
Rapid growth in agriculture will not only meet the nutritional needs of the poor and disadvantaged people but also improve access and availability.
The Prime Minister added, “We need to address the issues of absorption of nutrition, health and hygiene, which in turn depend on many other factors such as the availability of clean drinking water, sanitation and also on the education and status of women in society.
"We do not see agricultural development as the only element in our strategy but it is nonetheless a key part of any viable strategy.”
What Indian government is doing?
The Indian government’s priority, according to PM, is to ensure food security, which in turn requires self-sufficiency. He said that the government focused on adequate production of cereals and pulses because they are the staple food.
The government is supporting specific programs like ‘Eastern Region Development Programs’ to explore ways of better agricultural productivity and market access. The ‘National Food Security Mission’, launched five years ago, spreads the best practices in different areas and states.
The PM also noted that agriculture is getting more feminised with high participation of women, which can lead to reduction in malnutrition.

BIKRAM (PATNA): With the vision of creating stress-free and violence-free society, the Art of Living (AoL) Foundation on Sunday launched its Swavlamban Movement in Bihar.
"Our focus is on spreading awareness among villagers about various social ethics and values. Through this campaign, we want to make villages self-reliant with adoption of natural farming and water conservation, even while maintaining social harmony and unity," senior mentor with AoL Sanjay Kumar said.
Kumar was addressing a gathering of about 1,000 villagers here, about 40 km from Patna.
The main agenda of the Swavlamban Movement is to make villages conflict-free through active participation of local people.
"About 70% people are not contributing to the nation's development. The Swavlamban Movement will bring unity in villages, in districts, then in the state and the country. It will finally lead to development of the country," Kumar said.
"The villagers will also be encouraged to work towards removing the menace of drugs from the society. Special focus will be on checking corruption," he added.
The movement will lay stress on developing a sense of community spirit, so that villagers take on individual problems collectively and solve them easily.
"In the absence of this collective spirit, villagers unsuccessfully try to solve individual problems with their own might," the AoL mentor said.
The Swavlamban Movement has been successfully running in dozens of villages of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Kumar outlined the process of natural farming and its benefits to farmers. The villagers requested the Swavlamban Movement volunteers to constitute a committee on natural farming in Bikram, which is likely to be done within a week.
The Movement will be launched in Aurangabad district next month.
"The main idea of the movement is to organise a 'let's eat together and let's sing together programme' which brings about closeness among villagers," another senior mentor said. This programme will be organised in Bikram within a fortnight.
Legislators of Paliganj, Bikram and Arwal assembly constituencies, Usha Vidyarthi, Anil Kumar and Chitranjan Kumar respectively, also laid emphasis on encouraging unity amongst villagers to bring about development and peace in villages.

For three weeks the world has been awaiting a face that would personify the determination and anger of the ‘jasmine revolution’ in Egypt. For all their accomplishments, neither Nobel Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei nor Arab League secretary-general Amr Moussa quite fitted the bill: they were too stuffy and detached from the passions on display in Tahrir Square.
Last week, many Egyptians found their symbol in the boyish, bespectacled, 31-year-old Google employee Wael Ghonim. Better known by his Facebook nom de plume El Shaheed (the martyr), he could well be mistaken for another dishevelled but trendy techie with a trademark black computer bag—someone likely to be naturally awkward in the perfectly tailored suits that make Hosni Mubarak and Omar Suleiman appear so distinguished. To middle-class Egypt, the backbone of the Egypt uprising, Ghonim is the archetypal boy next door.
It is Ghonim’s ordinariness and modesty that enthralled Egyptians last week when he appeared on Dream TV after his release from 12 days of incarceration. His message was sincere and touchingly innocent: “We did this because we love Egypt”, “these are our rights”, “this is not the time to spread ideologies” and, “we deserve much better than what is happening to us.” There was no bitterness and no call for recrimination—he actually praised the patriotism of his tormentors -- just a plea for life with dignity. He ended with a tearful apology: “I want to tell every mother and father who lost a child, I am sorry, but this is not our mistake. I swear to God it’s not our mistake. It’s the mistake of every one of those in power who doesn’t want to let go.”
By the time an emotionally distraught Ghonim abruptly concluded the interview, leaving the channel to sign off with mournful music and photographs of nameless boys felled by bullets in the prime of their lives, it is said there was not a dry eye in Egypt. The spurt in the numbers in Tahrir Square last Tuesday, particularly of women, could be traced to the Ghonim interview.
If Ghonim’s charm does indeed prove a game changer and Egypt persists in its determination for a new order that is democratic in both form and spirit, it will be a spectacular development. Since the June 2009 protests in Tehran against a blatantly rigged election, there has been growing interest in the role of social media as a catalyst for change in authoritarian societies. As the creator and administrator of the “We are all Khaled Said” page on Facebook, which attracted some 3.5 lakh followers before the uprising, Ghonim personified the new cyber activism. The Egypt uprising was triggered by an improvised protest rally on January 25 convened by the April 6 movement, a group that was forged primarily out of social media linkages.
This is not to go along with the facile description of the Egyptian troubles as the Facebook or Twitter uprising. Had the anti-Mubarak stir been merely a middle class revolt of the well-off, under-35s, it would have had an impact but it wouldn’t have either shaken an entrenched regime or forced a grudging shift in US policy. The demonstrations have attracted mass support, well beyond the relatively small group linked by social media. It has seen the participation of the bazaars, the working class and a Muslim Brotherhood that is ideologically disinclined to share the liberal values of the likes of Ghonim.
Where Facebook and Twitter have played a seminal role is in drawing a very wide swathe of the educated, middle class youth. In her interview with Ghonim, the feisty TV presenter Mona el-Shazly spoke about a curious facet of the movement: the participation of the sons and daughters of Establishment figures in the Tahrir Square protests. The Egyptian revolution is also a babalog revolt against the lack of personal and creative freedom.
It is this facet of the uprising that has contributed to the muddle in US policy. Hitherto, Washington viewed the global spread of the social media as both a success of US enterprise and a vehicle for the spread of American values. Each tirade against a Google or Twitter-inspired ideological contamination by Iranian clerics and Chinese commissars was seen as a triumph of US soft power. In Egypt, the earnest boys and girls spouting the virtues of democracy in American accents to CNN and BBC were also upholding the spirit of freedom the US always showcased. Tragically for Washington, this idealism was at odds with American geo-political interests.
Like the Egyptian youth who have outgrown the traditional culture of deference but yet remain passionately committed to Egypt, Twitter and Facebook are also setting their own norms. If social media helped liberate Egypt, Egypt could trigger the liberation of the social media from its American origins.
